Hey folks, I'm just wondering if this is a scam or not.

I got a foot-long white envelope in the mail today, and it says "US Department of Commerce, Economics and Statistics Administration, US Census Bureau" in the upper left corner, with my address in the center. It says "To the resident of" and then has my address. But it does not feature my name anywhere.

On the center-left of the envelope, below the senders address, it has a black-lined box that says "The American Community Survey", and then below that it says, in bold, "Your Response Is Required By Law".

In the lower left portion of the envelope, it says "United States Census" in small font.

I've lived on my own since I was 18, and I've never gotten anything like this in the mail. I haven't opened the envelope. Is this real, and if so, why is this "required by law"?

    Thanks for that!

So.....what do I do? Fill it out, or ignore it?

I'm a very private person. The less the government knows about my address, the happier I am.

I think I'm going to put this aside until someone comes knocking.

At which point, I'll probably ignore them there too.

File 13 is the trash. There are 12 months in the year. Book keepers kept a file for each month. The file for month "13" was the trash.

You made it to 33 and have never filled out a census. Wow. But if you don't trust it don't fill it out. I can assure you that if you don't fill it out and it's real someone will come knocking. I know through experience. The census is taken every 10 years and was last done in 2010. The next should be in 2020. So I would be wary of what you just got.

Govt funding is in part based on demographics. it is to your advantage that your race, age, income, etc. be properly represented.

    Fair enough, thanks.

That's what doesn't make sense. If they did it in 2010, and it comes every 10 years....then why are they doing another one 6 years later?

Maybe I did one when I was 23, and just don't remember it? My 20s were a blur of personal problems.

If you are a patriotic American interested in having our country function the way it should, you obey the law and send it in. If you don't like the law, you contact your elected representatives and have it changed.

    It's how our country works.

    Thanks.

It's folks with this kind of attitude that help put my lawyer friends' kids through college.

I was a census worker in 2000. Most people were good to interview. Some were not. A few were down right nuts, and likely dangerous.
