I am looking to buy a good reliable, AR style 5.56 semi-auto rifle for under $800. Can any of you out there help me out with some suggestions to narrow out my scope of search?

    Thanks

Well, I recently bought an m&p 15 sport that fits that description. Closer to 600 and runs great.
But, had I to do it over again, I would take a hard look at Palmetto Armory. You can buy the upper and lower separately for a lot less than the m&p and have some money left to buy ammo.

For "out the door" purchase, ready to run, you cannot beat the value of the M&P15 Sport.

Had mine for 3 years now, never a bobble and very dependable. For an $800 investment, you will have some money for optic and extra mags. We all keep going from there a bit, furniture and stuff, but that's all on YOU.

    Good luck and ENJOY

SW M&P Sport and Ruger AR556 can be had for well under $800. More like the $600 range.

If you are looking to buy new from a store, the m&p and Dpms seem like your best bet. If you are willing to build, there's dozens of companies that sell complete uppers that you have to mate up to a lower of your choice, and still be within budget. I remember I bought a bcm upper with Daniel defense lite rail for under 600 bucks a year or so back.

Both the Ruger AR-556 and the M&P-15 Sport can be bought for under $600 right now.

If you willing to push that $800 just a touch I would buy a Colt LE-6920MP for $860

Or spend $725 on a Colt LE-6920 OEM1 and add what ever furniture you want on it. This is the best option in my opinion. This is going to get you an excellent quality rifle and keep you within a few dollars of your budget.

Cabela's has the DPMS Oracle for $599. They often have it on sale for $529. IMO that is a freakin' steal. Leaves you money to upgrade the furniture or optics.

This. If you've got $800, just get a 6920, or a 6920 OEM1 and hit the EE for some cheap furniture.

The M&P Sport is really a great budget rifle, but your budget is in 6920 land. Get the 6920.

    Move to a free-er state?

Seriously, as others have said, there are quite a few excellent choices for under $600, but if you want to spend $800, then the Colt 6920 is a no-brainer choice.

Can't have a collapsable or can't have a folding stock? Those are two different features.

BTW you can install a fixed stock on any AR. So buy what you want and swap the stock out. If you can't buy something with an adjustable stock to be shipped in, then buy that LE-6920 OEM1 I linked to and add the fixed stock at the time of transfer. If it can't be shipped to you unless it already has the fixed stock installed, talk to Grant at G&R before you order it. I'm sure he can install one for you before he ships it out.

Under $800 is easy. Under $500 is doable.

Re: scopes: What type of shooting are you planning on and at what distances? Not to change the subject but for 800.00 you could build and have a free floated barrel a G2S trigger and Shieln match grade barrel. Just a thought.

S&W makes rifles that are compliant for many states. I live in CA and had to buy one with a bullet button. A real pain in the ***.

Another option is buy a receiver and build it the way you like. DPMS has blems for under $60.00 That has to go through an FFL, buy a parts kit for around $60.00, the stock you prefer or are allowed, then the upper of your choice. All told you can get one you build for around $600 plus or minus.

PSA complete lower and top it off with a BCM complete upper. PSA should be able to pin the stock for you since you live in commie NJ or pick a lower with a fixed A2 size stock. If memory serves me right you can't have a flash hider in NJ. So you have to order the upper with a comp instead of a flash hider.
