Without going to a shooting range is a royal PITA! I know I can shoot on BLM land but where is damn near impossible to find out. I don't want to go to a range as the 1 shot per second rule negates what I want to do. AND the whole having to deal with other shooters and so forth...

Any of you Central CA folks know a place where I can head out that is close to San Benito, Santa Cruz, Monterey counties? And get some target time in?

There are plenty of maps that show BLM and State Land in California. Many road atlases do this.

I prefer to use this software as it allows me to search a little easier.

When I was in stationed in San Diego I had to go to ranges. I could not find any open land BLM or forrest service to shoot on. I drove to the middle of the desert to go shooting, and the local authorities advised me it was illegal. Protected cactus or some BS.

There are some places near Tahoe off of Highway 50 that you can get away with shooting. I have never had a problem out there, although it is probably illegal as well. It would be a long drive for you, but the scenery is worth it. If you want any further directions PM me.

I know the feeling, I used to live in San Jose. That's one of the things I couldn't stand about the area. Great for riding, not for shooting. Moving to a small town is the best thing I ever did. Open BLM land for shooting is less than thirty minutes away now.

One thing you might try: After I moved, I went to the local BLM office and asked them. They showed me the areas open for hunting, where I could do my shooting. I bought some maps from them, then used a combination of maps and google earth to do some exploring. Found some great areas.
