In the fall when cattails flower their seed is carried by the wind or water to new areas. If you collect a few you can use these flowers (which can be carried in a plastic film container)to check the movements of even a light breeze. They can be broken into tiny parts and will last quite a while and they are free.

I used to take a film canister of cotton or ashes, then used the "windicator" (powder in a small puffer bottle) and then started using a piece of thread drapped across a branch next to my stand.

For stand hunting, the string is the best thing out there since is it always "on" and working.

For ground hunting, I just grab a little grass or leave parts then toss.
