is a good novel from Shute, who was an aeroplane designer in his other life. If memory serves, he also wrote "On the Beach"...

He did write On the Beach. I've read two or three of his books.

His autobiography Slide Rule was really good. It was all about his career as an aircraft designer. Shute worked on a design project during the twenties on a long range dirigible. He was on a test flight from the UK to Canada and back and wrote about being on top of the craft during the flight.

One of the ones I read was Most Secret, set during World War II and was quite good.
