I'm coming closer to selecting the final three handguns for self defense. I no longer hunt upland game, waterfowl or big game and I seldom take long hikes in the wilderness; no more backpacking, mountain climbing, canoeing or camping out. Therefore, no need for a large caliber handgun. Also, no need for a shotgun, scoped rifle or tactical long gun.

As of this point, I've narrowed my choices to three: a Glock 19-4, a Glock 43 and a Ruger LCP2. The 19 has a Streamlight TLR-1 HL for the bedside, early morning walks (pre-dawn) and CC or car duties if I'm heading someplace unknown or think I'll be out late at night, which isn't very likely because I'm usually in bed before 9.

The 43 is just so darn handy tucked between the driver's seat and center console and can easily be slipped behind my belt prior to exiting the vehicle for shopping, dining, movies, etc.

For deep cover, the LCP really fills the bill in my right front pocket or in a Smart Carry holster setup.

I have confidence in the reliability of each gun and with only three I don't have to wonder where I left any one of them (an issue at my age of 67).

Three seems about right for this moment. How about you?

I'd probably rather have a shoulder fired tool for home defense though. Rifles and shotguns are just so much more effective, and easy to hit with, than handguns, as a general rule.

Warp - Appreciate your thoughts, but where I live the odds of a home invasion are so remote that I think I'd feel foolish having money tied up in a long gun designed for self defense ... even a wing gun with minor modifications (seeing as I don't hunt anymore in deference to a pair of knees that have both been 'scoped' by orthopaedic surgeons).

I can have 5 on permit but if only allowed 3 it would be G19, G43, and S&W J frame. The J frame is for the pocket carry days, maybe 5% of time. Glock 19 hiking, travel and maybe 10% of time. Glock 43 other 85% of time.

Sounds about right Joel. I've owned J frames and just couldn't shoot them that well. The LCP fills that role quite nicely.

OP, Sounds like you got it all figured out. But since you asked, I would swap the LCP for a 26. I just can’t seem to join the .380 club.

I have three that would fit that bill, and since I've owned two of them for a good long while, I trust them to a high degree, and the third one is a Glock, so the trust is built in...
They are:
Glock 32C Gen 3
Ruger LCP Custom
Kahr PM9

All three are a basic equivalent to the size and purpose envelope that yours are, with the bonus that the 32C, I would not feel bad in black bear country with that as a woods walking gun, with something solid and hot in the chamber. (Not saying it's ideal, for that)
All of this said, I have one or two other choices available, like an NAA Pug 22WMR for shorts carry in summer, and a G41 (light/laser) in the nightstand full of Golden Sabres for something that wakes me up at 2am...

The 19, 43 combo is really solid.

Up until a week ago, my “carry shelf” consisted of a 43, 19, and 92G Compact. I recently added a 4th, so now I’m stumped.

You have a good mix there, I have a few more options that I'll probably hang onto, but use my 19 as a house gun, the 43 as a primary CCW and my early LCP is in my pocket as I type this.

OK. Now, how would the Sig P365 factor in?

I've always wanted to find ONE gun for all purposes, but it has eluded me. The more I read about the 365, I'm wondering if it might not fill the ONE gun bill ... size/weight of a G43 with the capacity of a G26, with the potential for a 300 lumen tac light. What's not to like?

If I sold all three Glocks and the Streamlight I could pick up two Sig365s, a tac light, spare mags, holsters and still have some change for IDPA matches. Heck, I could even shoot the Sig in the SSP division, given that mag capacity, and I've always desired shooting ONE gun that had a trigger I could master (to the best of my ability), with a carbon copy for HD and CC if I should ever lose one in the aftermath of a self defense action.

The P365 is an unknown dependability wise at this point. Don't get me wrong, I'm interested in one as well, but I'm waiting at least a year to see how it shakes out.

I like the LCP and G43 (of which I have both). For that 3rd gun, I chose a G26; it can be carried concealed and comfortably, and it can serve double-duty as an HD gun w/a G17 mag+grip sleeve. I'm not a fan of lights on guns, so the lack of rail on the G26 doesn't bother me. If you must have a mounted light, then you're right on track with the 19.
