Well Ive finally made up my mind and in about a week or so Ill be buying the Lee breechlock hand held press, some 10mm dies, probably the set of four, unless someone talks me out of it. Ill also be getting a caliper, and a scale. Oh ya, and another book! Any ideas? Ive already got the ABC's of reloading. Besides bullet components, is there anything else Im forgetting just to get up and running?

Well the point of this thread was to get some tips from the pros on good places to purchase bullet components. You know, powder, primers, bullets, cases...So, since Ill soon be a member of the club, it is that time fellas, to share all your dirty little secrets about where you get your components, and anything else you feel I just need to know!

Thanks for any and all tips!

P.S. Im already planning on purchasing the press kit from midway usa for $39.99, unless somebody has a better place.

Sounds great! You will love it. I get powder and primers locally, and bullets and brass online. I usually order my bullets and brass from MidwayUSA, unless I find an awesome deal elsewhere. If you order powder and primers, you have to pay a HAZMAT fee and shipping, which negates the savings. You should have a sporting goods store locally that will sell powder and primers. Any Cabela's, Gander Mtn., or Bass Pro should sell them. Privately owned stores (at least here) are usually cheaper. Don't forget about gun shows. They always have reloading supplies for cheap. Good luck, and let me know if I can help with anything.

Any powder recommendations? Im already looking at getting some longshot. Is it very accurate? Im looking for something that will offer good velocity and accuracy while still being a good plinking load at lower doses...

The guys here are good!

Portable presses are good to learn with, but I think you'll get the whole process within half an hour anyway. I'd be looking toward the future when you'd want to do a box of 100 or more, and how much time you want to spend doing it.

If your budget allows, go with something more automated. They don't take that much room. A Lee Classic turret runs just over $100, but I can do 100 rounds in less than an hour with powders like LongShot or BlueDot.

Also, keep your reloading away from living quarter as much as you can. Lead contamination, from primers, is something you must watch for.

My main recommendation would be to get a bench mounted press rather than a handheld. You will want to outgrow the handheld (at least in volume) in the first few hours....

For powders, here are my recommendations, in order of "must-have" to "another good option":

1. Blue Dot; a great all around powder. Meters decently, lots of fun with heavy charges, good-great velocity in longer barrels, accurate.

2. 800-X; any 10mm reloader has to have a bottle. Not the BEST to learn with since metering is, umm, difficult, but the velocity is amazing, pressures are low, and the bulk makes it almost impossible to double charge (the double charge is the newbie killer, that is the MAIN thing to watch out for).

3. Longshot; a good 800-X alternative for better metering. However, it is dense, and would be easy to double charge. Accurate, and clean.

4. Power Pistol; GREAT metering, great accuracy, big boom and flash (almost as much as Blue Dot) is fun at the range, good velocity.

5. AA#9; probably should be higher in the list, but I've never used it. Supposed to meter great, and almost impossible to double charge (good beginner powder). One of the better powders for high velocity.

6. Unique; the best plinking powder. Can be loaded REALLY light, but stays VERY accurate. Meters ok. Gets a bit smoky and dirty when you go really light. Best velocity extreme spreads and standard deviations I've ever seen. Low charge weights in plinking loads make it very economical.

Any of these would make a great beginning powder. If you had to buy only three, I'd get Blue Dot, 800-X, and Unique. If only two, I'd say Blue Dot and 800-X. If you had only one choice, I would choose Blue Dot.

My top powders. Not necessarily in order.

Accurate #9: one of the slowest-burning powders for 10mm. A micro-fine ball powder that meters wonderfully. You cannot double charge a case. Has been my top performer in 155 gr + weights. Down side is that you will go through powder faster. Needs good neck tension and, in some cases, mag primers to work consistently. Seems to have a reasonably low flash.

Long Shot: preliminary testing has been promising. Good metering, very good performance. Am going to work with this more to stretch its legs a bit. May become my favorite. We shall see.

Blue Dot: Best groups. Period. Meters decently. Good performance. Dirtier at lower pressures. Very clean at higher pressures. Loud. Fireball. This is what I have used more than any other by far, although less so of late.

Accurate no. 7: Micro-fine ball powder. Overlaps with BD in use. Not as high velocity as Blue Dot on the top end, but close. Cleaner burn at lower pressure and superb metering. Good top velocities, but not best.

800-X. Used a lot of it. It is a very strong performer, but not enough to hassle with when Accurate no. 9 and Longshot are right in there in top velocities. I am down to my last pound, finally, and have no plans to buy more as of now. A lot of guys really like it, but frankly I thing some of the striking numbers out there are due to some over-weighted charges. Not trying to talk anyone out of it. The one application where I really like 800-X is with 135 gr Noslers. Little guys MOVE with 800-X.
