Have a chance to trade my Gen 4 G17 in Flat Dark Earth for an unfired Gen 4 G34 outright.

Might be nice to drop my G17 for the G34 and then pick up a G19 so I have: G26, G19 and G34 - get all the big size jumps....

So.... would you do it - Yes or No?

I wouldn't sell / trade my OD or FDE glocks. You may never get em back!

True, but I'm betting they are available again en mass.

Thats the idea - to have the small (26), medium (19) and large (34). The biggest jumps in sizes as the 19 and 17 are very very close in dimensions.

I'd do it. You'd have a sub-compact 26, a compact 19 and a full-size 34. Competition, home defense and/or concealed carry are all covered. Go for it and don't look back.

What will you use it for? I have Gen4 G34, 17, and 26. The 34 is my gamer gun with Dawson FO adj sights. The 17 and 26 are defense guns equipped with Ameriglo Operators. The 19 is the only one I don't have much use for. If I had to choose one, it would be the 17...

    Good question.

I am not into games, yet, but I'd like to someday - in all likelihood I'd probably use my G26 or G19 in the beginning as I want to stay in the civilian class that the G34 would not allow.

G34 will be for a little of everything: range fun, CCW, camping, and HD - I have been carrying my G17 more than my G26 as of late - even in the 100*+ AZ temps here - and don't think the G34 would be that much harder to carry... I dont like having handguns that I cannot carry.

I usually carry OWB concealed with an unbuttoned cover shirt - I am in AZ so do not worry about printing or the barrel hanging below my cover shirt - nobody notices (but I do not open carry). I figure enough people carry full-size 1911s concealed that carrying the G34 isnt too too crazy - plus its just an inch more barrel and same grip length as my G17. Riding in the car would be the only issue I foresee being a bit of an annoyance with such a long barrel.

G19 would be for CCW when I cant dress around the G34 and the 26 is for pocket carry (yes I pocket carry my G26 at times) or IWB when Im in a tshirt or polo.

I feel pretty confident I could make the G34 work.

You know what, I kind of feel that for a CCW gun, the dark earth color is a little unclassy and TOO tactical.

I wonder about the difference in perception a "non-gun" person has seeing an all black gun vs. a tan/OD gun on someones hip... I'm serious.

Vienna, I can tell you really want the 34. So you should do it just because.

Now, I would choose my 17 for defensive carry over my 34 unless I thought I might have to make a very long shot. The 17 is just so well balanced and relatively compact that it hardly feels like a full size gun. It carries well too. Maybe it's the big Dawsons I have on my 34, but it feels much bigger to me than just due to the slightly longer barrel.

You know me well it seems :)

Is the draw awkward with the G34 in relation to the G17? Meaning do you really have to pull noticeably higher and sweep wider to clear the holster?

Awkward draw? Not at all. I ran my 34 at a 1300 round two day pistol course with Mike Seeklander a few weeks ago. By the end of the class that 34 felt like an extension of my hand. Now I do use a more "gamer" oriented holster for the 34: a BladeTech Black Ice, which has a cutout at the front to speed clearance during the draw.

Thank you - that answers that.

I'll miss my G17 and the color, BUT the guy just offered $50 in addition to his like-new G34. He is just dying for the FDE color to match his AR.

I know, I know, sounds too good to be true, but we will meet at the range so I can shoot the **** out of the G34 and break it down for a good inspection. At this point I feel that I know what to look for.

I have a G35 (40 SW) n I prefer that over the g23...it feels lighter n easier to carry even with it being much longer

Look at the specs, as I think you misunderstand the "size jums."

    G19 barrel is about 3/4in longer than a G26
    G17 barrel is about 3/4in longer than a G19
    G34 barrel is about 3/4in longer than a G17
    G17L barrel is about 3/4in longer than a G34

G17, G34 and G17L share the same frame.

    I think I understand them...

Just looking at Gen 4s, so the 17L excluded, having a G26, G19 and G34 give more diversity in barrel length and is a more rounded trio as opposed to 26, 19 and 17. Would you agree with that logic?

    Would you make this trade?

    Thanks :)

Well I think Vienna should do it because he wants a 34.

My logic is a bit different. I would keep the FDE 17 and buy a 34, or better yet make the trade and buy another 17. A 26, 17, and 34 give the same "diversity" but I have two compatible full size lowers, which is a nice backup. The 17 carries well for me unless I need a small gun--the 26.

As much as I like the FDE I would do the trade as I like the G34 better than the G17. I have carried the G34 and I do not find it noticeably different in a holster or drawng it from the holster than the G17 but I like shooting the G34 more.
