I heard it was possible to track down an AOL user's IP address to a specific city and state, but I haven't seen how yet. I've used visualroute.visualware.com to trace these IP addresses and still end up with the main AOL center in Virginia:

    cache-rtc-ac07.proxy.aol.com 152.163.100.136
    cache-mtc-ac07.proxy.aol.com 64.12.116.136

I think the user is hitting my site from the Houston/Baytown area, or the Lake Charles area.

    Help!

    TIA

Well obviously that web site is useless for tracking AOL IP addresses.

I'm afraid you can't do it.

You can lookup the WHOIS information for the IP, which will tell you location details for the service provider to whom the IP is assigned, which may corrispond to the location of the user of the IP. But then again it may not, and aol serves a LOT of people and as far as I know they all give the same WHOIS details.

Keep in mind that AOL is DHCP only, AFAIK. I believe that each time a user logs on his/her lease is renewed for a different IP. Therefore, it maybe futile to try to track an IP that is either currently not leased or that is leased to some other user besides the perpetrator.

That wouldn't matter when tracking to a geographical area. Unless you're aware of any DHCP servers that assign IP addresses across the U.S. ;)
