    Just to ruffle your feathers this morning;
Our school system just built three new grade schools, another under construction. In this bankrupt state of Illinois, no one seems to know where the money has come from. Well, that is another topic. One of my daughter in laws is a SE teacher, with her graduate degree, and is teaching in one of these new schools. Friday night they had a meet/greet for family of staff, soup/sandwich deal fundraiser. Many folks there. I asked my daughter in law if I could see her classroom, she had a work assignment, but my son (who is a cop) said he would take me. Anyway, very nice room for her class. My son says, "Dad you are going to like this" He takes me to the back of the classroom, where there is a solid wood door, with a small pane of glass. He opens the door and says, "This is their lock up room, one of two, the other is on the other end of the school" . The room was about 8 ft wide by 10 ft deep, and completely bare. The room is meant to keep unruly or uncontrolled kids in, locked down. My son said if a kid is brought in, the classroom must be emptied and the class taken elsewhere. Keep in mind, this is a K-5 school, kindergarden through 5 th grade. How times have changed. In my grade school, unruly kids were dealt with, with a very thick ruler.

It would've been better making a safe room for school shootings and tornados.

I went to elementry school in NY. It was Catholic school and also used the ruler or paddle to keep order. Seemed to work just fine. No mass shootings, stabbings, murder suicides. The one time I saw a kid a grow a pair and talk back directly he was yanked out of his chair so fast my head spun.

Fifth grade we moved to Ft. Lauderdale and I went to public schools. The paddle was the childhood development tool of choice.

I miss the “old days”. The older I get the better I was lol.

    Incredible. Absolutely incredible.

Save your children folks: Private School, Home School, or NO School.

The last administration at our school, used to call the police whenever they had an unruly 2nd or 3rd grader
Not sure what the current one does, if anything.

My first office was like that. I was a juvenile PO, Court was in the old juvie detention building; my office was a cell: bar cell door and, private toilet!

    Well, maybe not so private.

Meanwhile dozens of rolls of duct tape, and 20 or so yard sticks languish unloved in hardware stores. (cue the sad music). Wont you donate a few dollars to see that these find a good home in a school near you?

I work in the educational system. And the days where the problem kids were dealt with/weeded our are long gone. Now, the teacher and entire class are expected to adapt and accommodate the problem student(s).

I started when a teen, still say it today. "If you want me to watch your kids I need 2 rolls of duct tape per child, and written permission to physically discipline them if needed...."
The few times they agree they are amazed how well their kids behave. (For a while but don let them run wild)

What amazed me is the kids would beg me to watch them again. Most liked having clear rules, punishment...
They were told what to do. If they obey we will follow this. (Interesting activity). If they don't ( something much less fun). They knew from start rules.

I was taken with group of a school. On Native American land ;). I was upset with its condition. Until I found it was less then 5 yrs old. There was 30+ yrs of damage. It was a well built cement structure but anything that could be damaged was....

Those are "time-out" rooms. Very common in Special Ed schools for children with behavior problems. Usually (!) the doors are spring loaded, to stay OPEN unless held by a teacher. They are designed that way so the kid is never unsupervised while in the room. The kids learn quickly that when they act out, they go to a small and boring room for as long as needed to calm down. They do actually work when used as intended.

In my town the public schools don't have them... problem kids are places in special schools.

Sounds to me like they are preparing the unruly ones for adulthood.

    Twice.

(To be clear I never went to a Catholic school. But kids I met later told me about the "never twice" and smart ones learned by idiots mistake.
