When you say M4 style AR carbine, exactly what is your description of such? Some guys use the M4 style monicker in a very general sense. Are you talking strictly a carbine with a carbine gas system? A 16" or 14.5" barrel with M203 cuts? Standard FSB? Detachable carrying handle or not? M4 type handguards? 4th Gen stock (waffle stock)? 4150 CMV chrome-lined barrel? 4150 CMV non-chrome barrel? 4140 CM barrel Melonite treated barrel? Cold hammer forged barrel? 1/7 twist rate? 1/9 twist rate? Also, are you talking MSRP or what you can actually buy one for? Are you talking factory built weapons only?

The reason I ask is that there are many different manufacturers that produce several different versions. There is also the options an individual has to purchase separate uppers and lowers to assemble their own. Any "Top 5 under $1000" is going to very subjective. Everyone will have their own idea based on bias and/or experience. Some will automatically say the Colt 6920 as it has been popular for many years. Is it one of the "Top 5 under $1000", well that depends on who has them and what they are selling them for. MSRP is $1049-$1099 according to Colt. Companies like S&W, SIG SAUER, Del-Ton, Aero Precision, Anderson Mfg., and several others offer M4 type AR carbines for less than $1000 MSRP. You have PSA where you can buy a complete Premium upper and lower to assembly your own M4 type carbine for well under $1000. In my opinion, it is every bit as good as the Colt 6920 (BTW, I own two of these Colts). It is also easy for someone to build a good quality M4 type carbine for well under $1000 as I did.

:goodpost: You know your stuff Jarhead, I see you are a Force Recon MARINE The best although a little nuts though. I'm A FORCE TROOPS MARINE from Camp LeJune back in the day. You guys were at Geiger as I remember. We were across the street from the BAMs. I can recall the look one got when you said I'm FORCE TROOPS when asked who are you with. I retired on 30 in '94.

I don't own an AR15 - this is why I'm asking the question . Applications would be range , self - defense (typical hobby usage) . I prefer non - proprietary components (i.e. Mil - Spec) for ability to swap out components and I do not care much for proprietary gas systems , so direct impingement gas system is fine with me .

Perhaps easier to ask for those AR's that are similar in style and value to the Colt 6920 ?

Any $1,000 rifle with forged receivers and a decent barrel. I'm sure Colt is on that list with about 20 other options. Can't think of any offerings at that price point that are dogs. Seems a few of the low cost AR's are kind of sketchy, but for a grand it would be hard to go wrong with what's out there. Spikes mid length comes to mind or Rock River, CMMG, Bushmaster or pin your own together with a nice quality lower and premium upper.

If you really want a M4 type carbine, here are a few I recommend.

Here are a few without the M4 profile barrel I would recommend taking a look at.

All of these ARs are with the carbine length gas system. All of them are under $1000. They are all good to go. Quite frankly, I would not put all my eggs in one basket. If all you have is $1000 or a little less, then buy one of the less expensive ARs (with or without a rear sight) and throw a decent red-dot optic on it. Also, you have to consider the cost of additional magazines, rear sight (if needed), and ammo. Any of these ARs will serve your purpose and for a long time to come.

I just want to add, if you consider ARs with mid-length gas systems, your options will broaden. They will not be M4 type carbines. Additionally, if you want to consider buying a separate upper and lower assembly, PSA (Palmetto State Armory) has some good inexpensive options that will keep you well under $1000 and leave money on the table for an optic and some ammo.

M&P Sport. Then you have enough left over for a case of ammo and 10 magazines.

    Most PSA variants...ditto above

Springfield Saint--lots of nice upgrades and still enough for a 10 Pmags.

etc etc etc... Its a saturated market and you don't need to spend $1000 to get very high quality reliable carbine these days.

    Easy.

For around $600 you can get a SW m&P Sport II.

For another $200 you can get a decent red dot from Vortex. That leaves $200 for extra mags and ammo.
