Time zones. It irritates me. This is just one of things that reminds how stupid most of the population in the USA is.

I had someone today setting up a call with me from the east coast. They said that today (JUNE) they wanted to call at 1:30pm EST.

STUPID STUPID people. EST = Eastern STANDARD time.

Guess what stupid people. Last time I checked JUNE is in Eastern DAYLIGHT time. DAYLIGHT time runs from Mar 11, 2012 through Nov 4, 2012. I know it is a little thing, but, seriously how am I supposed to take an analytical laboratory seriously if they miss details like DAYLIGHT time vs STANDARD time? There are some things that are technical in nature that require attention to detail.

But really, what this shows me is that most people are so ignorant when they see time zones that they don’t know the abbreviations that they use even stand for.

So for everyone who thinks that they are in EST, CST, MST, or PST….you are not if it is the summer.

Maybe I shouldn't drink espresso in the morning. Or maybe I need more!!

So when Microsoft prompts me to select my time zone, they further promote misinformation?

I never knew that, and actually set up a phone meeting last night for Thursday at 1900 EST. Thanks for the lesson. Perhaps I should make the call an hour earlier than intended.

Things would be so much easier if we all just went zulu. Screw time zones. Who cares if the sun is overhead at 1200? Who cares if your show time at work is 0030 or 1800? It's just a number.

Oh yeah. And people who think CONUS = the USA.

    Moar coffee!

Hence, the famous song by the band Chicago Transit Authority, later re-named to simply Chicago.
The question remains, the answer ever elusive.

Learn something new everyday. Call me stupid if you have to. Maybe he was like me and didn't know there was a difference. Doesn't seem to be that critical, you knew what he meant. No one has ever called me out when I use CST.

I work in IT, you have no idea how often I hear incorrect terminology. I don't let it bother me....except when someone says or spells labtop.

You are if you live in Arizona. Always MST there.

Same with Hawaii. Always HAST there.

Couple of other places don't do daylight saving time as well.

    No. They are not.

I live in mountain time zone

    What microsoft shows is:

(UTC-7:00) Mountain Time (US & Canada)

They do not say "Mountain Standard" or "Mountain Daylight" They just say mountain time and under that is shows dates that daylight time is valid.

Isn't that the definition of a pet peeve? Something that really doesn't matter but it is a big annoyance?

Well, Hawaiians want to be their own country and Russia claims to own Alaska, so its almost the same thing...

But what do we do with Texas?

I can see someone making a simple mistake and typing it wrong. I do that occasionally.

Nothing makes me more furiously angry than pointless, idiotic standards. If people won't give up daylight saving time, imperial measurements, and the like, they should be beaten until they relent.

Grammar is such a little, unimportant thing, but technical in nature.

    Oh no.

Everyone knows that technical people cannot spell correctly, have good grammar, be in social situations, etc. Where have you been? If they were good at the above they would have gone in a liberal arts program and wrote pointless romance novels....

Let it go free to fulfill its destiny as the greatest place ever.

Oh, and move the Prime Meridian to Dallas.

I use a 24-hour clock and get all sorts of sour looks from folk. I'm old and I don't care, but engineering is about precision and saying, "8 o'clock," isn't precision and I shouldn't have to ask, "Is that AM or PM?"

Computer operating systems use standard time as a base and adjust for daylight savings time, called Summer Time in Europe based on location and the current schedule. The Mountain Time Zone is the Mountain Time Zone regardless of the time of year. The Standard and Daylight Savings qualifiers are just that.

They eliminated Daylight Savings Time in Russia for just this reason- someone on one of their gun forums got peeved and Putin set things straight.

Well, I missed that too, but I never liked the metric system anyway.
