So you're strapped, standing up, into the bed of a moving pickup truck.....you take a baseball and throw it as far as you can in the direction that you're traveling..lets say 200' you also know you can throw a ball at 70mph when your not moving. how fast would you have to drive to catch up to and "catch" your own thrown ball?

I think the angle you throw it up at would be the key. Too high and it's going to slow down and land behind you. Too low and it's going to hit the ground in front of the truck.

    Interesting question.

Would you have to factor in the speed the ball is already traveling when it leaves your hand since the truck is moving? Or would you throw it and it would just smack you in the face immediately?

“The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.”

Assuming no air resistance, gravity, and vector is directly in the same direction you're currently traveling, current speed +70 mph to match the ball speed.

    Simple physics.

No, simply wrong. The ball leaving your hand starts at v=0

We have already proven this ...hypothesis in the observation of the Doppler Effect.

Unless you're in a Ford Lightning or Dodge Ram SRT-10, I doubt that most pickups would be able to accelerate fast enough to catch that ball.

This. The truck continues at 70mph. But the ball looses speed very quickly as soon as it leaves the hand.

I'm going to guess maybe a 45 degree arc for the truck to pass under the ball as it is falling down.

Just a little faster. The the 140 only matches the speed of the ball. Just a little more is need to start to close the distance.

It would be pretty cool to watch.

He just meant increase the velocity of the truck more than 70 mph so that the final velocity of the truck is greater than the velocity of the ball.
