The .45ACP maybe the caliber that the pistol was designed for, but the .38 Super cartridge was specifically designed for the M1911A1 pistol. There's a saying that the best gun is one which fires the caliber it was originally designed for.
And both the .45 and .38 super are good calibers for the platform. The 9mm is a hack, plain and simple. Though some do work, it took me 3 tries to get one that worked to my liking. Still, I only consider it a game gun, and would only relay on a straight cased, longer round, in a 1911 for serious purposes. Just my humble (or not so) opinion. YMMV.The .45ACP maybe the caliber that the pistol was designed for, but the .38 Super cartridge was specifically designed for the M1911A1 pistol.
Wasn't it a lightweight Commander that came first and then the Combat Commander that came later? One could also say the Colt Commander was originally designed for 9mm and the Army trials which were cancelled.
