Are you required by your department to carry 9mm? If not I'd most certainly go with the .45.

The .45ACP maybe the caliber that the pistol was designed for, but the .38 Super cartridge was specifically designed for the M1911A1 pistol.

And both the .45 and .38 super are good calibers for the platform. The 9mm is a hack, plain and simple. Though some do work, it took me 3 tries to get one that worked to my liking. Still, I only consider it a game gun, and would only relay on a straight cased, longer round, in a 1911 for serious purposes. Just my humble (or not so) opinion. YMMV.

Wasn't it a lightweight Commander that came first and then the Combat Commander that came later?

A ,355" 124 grain pellet, traveling 1200 fps is nothing to poo poo with proper placement.

The design also wasn't a 10mm originally, but with a very few tweaks, it seems to do fine, no matter the ID of the tube.
