Thought she was the smartest dog ever, 'til she bailed out of the Jeep at highway speeds....

She's a lab.......short, chubby, blocky, mostly black with a lot of yellow, gray face and a little cross eyed. So she's not going to win any beauty contests. But she's amazingly sweet. Fawns over my wife and for a long time I thought she was really smart.

Like I said above......we've barreling down a Farm to Market road she in the passenger seat, window down as always. And with zero warning at maybe 60mph she bails. Landing/skidding/rolling on grass. I stopped ASAP ready to run back and help her, doggy CPR anything. I get to her side of the Jeep and she's almost to me.

Not a single mark, scratch, bump or limp.

You'll know if she enjoyed it if she does it again.

    Glad your pooch is ok.

Damned good thing there were no fence posts, guard rails or telephone poles! Yike!! Lucky dog!

That certainly must have been a heart stopper for you. Sheesh.

I was scared out of my wits she'd be dead. And you are so right, we are super lucky she picked that LZ. The wife and that dog are close.........if the dog had died I might've too.

I put a Julius K9 harness on my Pups and a dog seat belt when we go for rides. Don’t have a Jeep but have two high drive German Shepherds. They’re Nosey and don’t like to sit still. Last thing I’ll ever do is lose one for my recklessness.

Yeah, me too. I'm glad the Op's dog is OK but I never trusted my dogs in vehicles. For being so smart they can do some awfully dumb things. I put a lot of time and money into my working dogs.

I called the vet through his assistant he said to skip it. But to bring her in if she seemed sleepy (concussion/head injury) or came up lame after. She didn't. This happened a week ago tomorrow.

I knew I'd take a little heat for this episode. But we got lucky the next guy/gal might not.

She's ridden window down and free in the car for years and never once did more than stick her head out like dogs do. Then she pulls this Crazy Ivan.

And for clarity it's a Jeep SUV not a Wrangler.

Last year my old black lab flopped his chunky butt out the window in town traffic....look in my mirror and see him waddling in the middle of the road! I stopped, got out, he had that "look" like it hurt and that was stupid..but did'nt want to show dad....

Glad the doggo is ok. This is the reason I've never put the rear windows down more than enough for my dog to just get her head out.

We strap our Golden Retriever down too but not because he will try to jump out. It's to keep him safe and he is very affectionate and tries to sit in my wife's lap. He follows her everywhere.
