How do they determine the distance listed on those signs? Do they just randomly pick numbers out of their butts?

A benevolent government agency assigns the measurement of the distance between signs to illegal aliens and pays them $1,500 per day and supplies them with absentee ballots for the next election, pre-marked for the Democrat.

Seriously, in the olden days one would use simple surveying techniques.

I think somebody with a chalk stick and a pedometer does it. Then they call in the sign crew.

I wonder about some of the city measurements. Do they measure to city limits? I've seen some that were WAY off.

Maybe it was to the city limit circa 1948 and the city's changed limit spots since.

Utah just redid all of ours. Over the years they became inaccurate due to roads being straightened or bypassing small towns. Federal DOT demanded that the markers be fixed so sign crews with a calibrated odometer reset and resigned them a couple of years ago. Then they were verified with a GPS. They found a HUGH number of mistakes on the old signs and markers.

A lot of businesses were upset because they had literature or road signs that were now wrong. A sign may have said "take exit 314" but the exit was now 318. It took Map quest and others a couple of years to fix their data also.

Hard to enjoy the benefits of automation from behind a computer ... or off to one side or the other.

I have oft questioned the purpose or need for government signs along the byways that relate how far it is to some specific point. I suggest that regardless of what the sign informs, the distance and time required to travel such doesn't change.

I propose a new scheme. Signs will have only three distances noted: A Ways, a Fer Piece, and Look for a Motel Soon.

They are supposed to be to the theoretical center of town/city.

"Do they measure to city limits?"

I was told it's the center of town in Virginia. That seems to work out pretty well in my travels here.

I was under the impression that the number of miles was from the sign to the post office in tht city (or closest one from that road)

If such signs are such a good idea, why don't they have them at strategic and informative locations at 30,000 feet in the air in the ocean? :headscratch:

I suggest that if you aren't going there, the name of a town and how far it is from where you are is irrelevant. If you are going there and you don't know where it is or how far it is from where you are, you likely won't arrive there anyway.
