The Next Global Health Emergency? What Is Lassa Fever?
The Nigerian Academy of Science has called for the current outbreak of Lassa fever in Africa’s most populous nation to be declared a national health emergency because of its severity. Adejuwon Soyinka asked Dr Doyin Odubanjo to unpack the background.

How serious is the current Lassa fever outbreak in Nigeria?

It is serious enough given the worsening trend. It has spread from just two states when it was first diagnosed in 1969 to 23 states in 2019. The situation has increasingly got worse over the years. In 2018, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control reported the largest ever number of cases in Nigeria, with over 600 confirmed cases and over 170 deaths.

And the numbers have continued to rise. An alarm was raised over the tripling of the number of suspected cases between 2017 and 2018 only for the reported number of suspected cases to rise in 2019.

Outbreaks have historically occurred during the dry season – November to April. But in recent years there have also been cases during the rainy season. Fatality rates are also unacceptably high. Over the last few years they have remained between 20% and 25%. This is particularly bad given that there is an effective treatment for the disease if it’s detected early and patients are presented at the hospital

I'm just hoping that the prince doesn't catch it and die before he sends me that 5 million he owes me for a small loan I gave him a while back. Still nothing in my bank account although I gave him all the details he needs.

ms gamboolgal and I have been working as a permanent resident in Nigeria since 2012 and before that in Equatorial Guinea just down South since 2003.

    Lassa Fever is every year....

In the Ebola outbreak afew year ago I was stranded at Muhamond Muhalla 2 international airport in Lagos, literally standing room only - shoulder to shoulder - for 2 days waiting to get a African Airline to Port Harcourt.....

Yellow Fever, Polio, AIDs, Cholera, Lassa Fever, Ebola, etc...... All is the norm here....

    Nothing to see here.....move on.....

Correct...and in the opinion of a respected doctor/scientist who was on TV the other day..."many of these countries medical practices are still in the 1800's...making treatments problematic"

Justin (not his real name) is hoping the call center there will still be open because he’s backed up on making his scam IRS calls.

In any case...it’s Africa. The most advanced continent in the world, they’ll be able to handle anything.

Drought, disease, famine, locusts.... aren't we due for frogs or something? Or did that already happen?

The anxiety is getting worse than the annual hurricane watch we have to go through each Summer. Normally I’d be getting a breaking this time of year.
