I opened my email this morning and saw tow spam emails from myself! The email address of the sender of the spam was exactly the same as mine. How can that happen, anyone know?

I thought an email addy was, you know, special. Darn.:steamed:

Could be your Email addy was somehow accessed.

Or possible, they could have just made it "look" like it came from you back to you.

For instance in many email programs(and I believe OE is one of them),

[email protected] will look the same as [email protected]. Note in the second address, I use a lower case L, as opposed to a capital I. On the programs that make the lower case L just a straight line, it could easily be mistaken for a i

I got a few like that, too.

many user programs have a "reply to" (or senders) field where you can put whatever you want.

legit uses include people sending a personal email from a work account, where they want the reply to be sent to their home account, or vice versa.

since the spammers already had your email address, they could easily put it in the "reply" data field. It got your attention, didn't it?

Yes it did get my attention.

May that person's mother run from beneath the porch and bite him on the leg as he returns from his "work".

It's an easy forgery. If you have your own email server, you can even forge the "From " field, even though some providers will verify back and will reject it, but then again, I am sure there are ways around it.

Anyway, it's a common trick on the net. Pay no attention to it. No one else does.

The only problem is, if they start spamming others with your email address as the source, some places may list you as a spammer, and your emails will be rejected automatically in the future, even if they are perfectly legitimate.

The only solution is to start taking malicious spammer seriously, but apparantly no one in the government does.

Two other possibilities are a spambot virus taking over your mail (you don't use OE, do you?), or someone's spoofing your email addy.

Check the full Headers and see what's what with the sender.
