Agreed, on one hand, but on the other hand, the homeowner had to move there knowing there was an HOA. While I like to see people sticking it to those minivan driving POS's, it's usually their own fault.

I'm always ambivalent about HOA's. I appreciate community standards. And as much as I appreciate this guy painting his home just to make a point, I believe the community needs to be uniform. I just always find it interesting that they seem to have an issue with the US flag being flown.

That always seems to be their issue

They encorce the rules, man. Thats what you pay them for (among other things). Could be worse. I've been trying to get my HoA to do something about the neighbor's barking dogs for half a year now, not even a callback.

In my experience HOA do more good than they do harm. Painting your house like an American flag doesn't help property values. On the other hand I have never run accross a HOA that prevents one from appropriately flying an American flag.

Just about every other week I'd get the infamous (RED) card .Funny thing though , I would take care of the problem every time. Now , I get a (RED) card for not telling them I had taken care of the problem.Well , being me with my sense of humor ,
every time I would take care of their complaints , I would not tell them just to build a fine collection of (RED) cards.

Now this was the home I had bought for my mother-in-law so I didn't always see what was going on.

After about the fifth time ,the old boss lady stopped by to scold me about my attitude . I told her you have time to notice the minor infractions but you don,t have time to notice it's been taken care of.I have a hell of a collection of (RED) cards.

God it's good to be home again.

One more reason I love living in the mountains! Freedom baby! It's a wonderful thing! As for the owner, that's just full of awesome right there!

Like many businesses not all HOA's are bad but not all are good. And like apartments sometimes you dont know how bad management is until you live there. Sometimes places arent reviewed much and residents may not offer much opinion. Rules can be posted and you can always ask before you move in but who would think a HOA would not allow a American flag especially if its in the US.

I believe the reasoning behind it is, If they allow the American flag(or any flag for that matter) they must allow another flag whether it's an American flag, or an Iranian flag, or some bull**** novelty flag. And who gets to decide if one flag is to offensive(whether someone hates a sports team or they are deeply religious). How do you create a standard, for the upkeep of said flags, or what flags can be shown?

According to this article, the house is in Cambridge, Maryland. The owner had a disagreement with the Historical Society and painted his house this way. I looked through Snopes, just because I saw this somewhere else, but I couldn't find that they had checked into it.

I have a low regard for snoopy little old lady types, peering over my fence, telling me how to run my property. That's why I moved away and bought a place with no HOA.

On the other hand, many HOAs can't get residents with a lick of sense to serve, so they end up with the little 'ol lady types. Or, if they do get someone decent to serve, a percentage of azzhats living there make it so miserable a job, they refuse to serve again.

Damn glad my neighborhood (and a 3 year old one, at that) doesn't have an HOA. Wouldn't have moved here if it did.
