I'm thinking about selling off some of my guns to purchase higher quality stuff. I am fond of what I have, but I like the idea of having 1 really nice handgun, long gun and shotgun as opposed to having several middle of the the road guns. As far as purpose, i use them all for range use only other than my shotgun which stays loaded at home. I will eventually get ccw, but not a priority right now. My idea is a nice 1911, a nice AR and maybe a benelli semi-auto.

What made me think of this is as a guitarist I've owned a lot of guitars and amps over the years. At one point I had like 10 guitars and 5 amps that were all just ok. One day I got a wild hair and sold it all and bought 1 very expensive, VERY nice guitar and 1 high end amp. Surprisingly this combination covers all the ground that the numerous mid level pieces of gear combined. I don't find myself lusting after stuff like I used to either. It cured my GAS.

Have any of you guys done this? Am I crazy?

Not crazy at all BUT many gun owners (me included) have sold/traded certain firearms and soon after, regretted it.

However, if the weapon in question is not overly rare or sentimental go for it!

That's the thing, I've been buying and selling guns and guitar stuff for years. Everyone in a while I have something that I feel attached to, but still sell them to upgrade. The regret has never lasted very long because nicer stuff trumps it. I don't have anything sentimental or family heirlooms. They are all just guns. Right now I have Glock, HK, CZ, Ruger, Norinco and Mossberg. They are all fun, great guns! None of them wow me though. I don't have a single gun that excites me to go to the range. Now, I've played with and used a lot of higher end stuff, and it has excited me.

You will be better served to keep what you have, and save up for some high end guns down the road. The last thing you want to do is rebuy a gun you sold, you will end up taking a bath on it most likely. I would only sell a gun if you outright don't like it.

I could not agree more. I recently put a rifle up for sale that I never shot nib and had more agrivation than it was worth dealing with knuckle heads. Just save up for your higher end pieces and keep what you have.

If you didnt really want what you already have, why'd you get it? If you've lived without some of the higher quality stuff up to this point, what harm could come in saving up to get the higher quality stuff? Besides, the higher quality stuff will look even better next to what you already have, wont it?

It's not that I don't like what I have. I am simply indifferent about a few of them. Some I received as partial trades when selling other stuff and some were given to me by non gun people who just didn't want it anymore. I have a Glock 17 and a Mossberg 590 that I wouldn't put on the chopping block. They aren't worth much but I enjoy them. I have a HK P7 that doesn't really serve a purpose with me other than I thought it was cool and I got it for stupid cheap. I might keep it just because it's potential to increase in value. Everything else is just stuff that I just sort of have. Things that sit and collect dust and seldom make it to the range.

Also, it's not that I need to sell them to purchase stuff, it is more cleaning house than anything. It is more like having a garage sale. Out withthe old and in with the new.

I do appreciate all of your responses. You've given me a lot to think about. I'm glad I posted this before I offered everything up for sale.

That Mossberg 590 and the Glock 17 is about as good as it gets. Add a Colt AR to the mix and you have the best of everything.

I've had some of the best high-end 1911s and they really only excel at single stack and CDP. For any other purpose, a Glock 17 kicks their butt.

What are you really gonna do with a shotgun?

I sold all my expensive guns and stuck with the Glock 19.

I for one have never regretted a gun I've sold, only the ones I didn't buy. Your plan is sound. Hang onto the Glock though, and use it when you get your carry permit. God forbid you have to use a gun for self defense, you don't want a grail sitting in the evidence locker while you're waiting to be cleared.

For me it's all about a great AR. So I went LWRC. With hanguns I really like being proficient with the same platform, so I only use my Glocks for the last 3 years. If I get a 1911 is only because they are beautiful weapons that's all for me. I problably add a 7.62 before the 1911.

The Les Baer 1911 that I bought last year quickly became a safe queen because I'm afraid of marring a $2000 gun through normal wear or in the cleaning process. I love and protect my Glocks, S&Ws, Baretta, etc. but I'm not reluctant to use them.

If you want functionality, sounds like you've already got a good lineup. If you want something more exciting, save part of your music gig money to buy a high-end piece or two. If you're just bored as h*** with the current guns and buying new ones is a gratification thing, have at it. You are the only one who really knows what makes you tick.

The Norinco is a SKS. Prices are pretty high on them right now so it wouldn't be a bad idea to sell it. I got it for free.

What I want in a shotgun is something to shoot clays with. I'm not really interested in an over and under as the one I want is more than I spent on my truck, which is pretty nice. I've had a rem 1100 and an old beretta semi auto and they were great, but would like to take it up a notch. I'm open to all brands though. Just want to find one that fits me.

I've had a few ok 1911's. Mostly springfields and one rock island that wasn't bad at all. I would love a Wilson or nighthawk! I have a friend with one of each and i shoot like a superhero with them! They are just all around nice.

A good AR is the main thing I'm after. I'm retired military and am very familiar and fond of the platform.

I've never been one to treat anythig like a safe queen. I use what I buy. I value function, but if i can have form and function I'll be a happy camper!

I agree completely. I buy the best quality I can afford. As my income goes up and the quantity of trading goods I have increases, I can afford even more quality. This goes for guns, cars, electronics, and almost everything else. Nobody misses an old 32" tv after they replace it with a 55" plasma. I have found the same to be true of guns. You can trade up? Do it and don't look back.

Less better > more less better IMO as well.

I went from 47 handguns and rifles at one point down to 4 nice 1911s and a little Sig 238 as a small CCW. Also 2 nice ARs and 3 .22LR rifles. Round it off with a 20 year old 12 Ga pump and I feel like I am where I need to be. I know it was the right call for me.

Sounds like your experience with guitars is exactly the right one to reference.

Nothing wrong with such idea. I prefer to have 3 quality firearms than 10 crappy ones.

Since your looking for an AR. You could just pick up a lower and then build what you want slowing without having to sell anything. I do agree with your thought pattern. I would as others have suggested keep the 590 & Glock or CZ. Sell everything else if you aren't using them. It's better to have something that you use often than a bunch of dust collectors. Don't let the things you own, own you.

I have bought and sold like crazy. I really only have regretted selling glocks since I always come back to them. Finally though I found a 45 to fit all my needs, the Sprgfld LW Champion Operator 4" bbl w/rail. It does everything I need. Then one good AR with all the accessories, a good 12g home defense and glock. Can't go wrong..
