Things you would buy but aren't because of the economy.

If the economy were going strong, I would get a better truck, and new living room furniture.

As things are, I have been limiting spending because there is a lot of uncertainty at work, and jobs are not exactly plentiful.

I learned a hard lesson, and I'm glad I did because I was young in life. I worked for my father (family business), the economy tanked and he was forced to close the business in '09 after 20+ years of success and growth. I'm not saying I was living outside of my means during this time, but I was provided a very good level of income for a kid right out of college and didn't think twice to buy the things you have mentioned. Hell I went to the gun shop for ammo, and brought home two Glocks that day.

I was unemployed for the better part of a year, a young college grad with a bachelor's degree to pay for, a mortgage, and a child on the way. I'll just say it changed my whole view on wants vs. needs. It took me a long time (after I got settled in a new career making good money) to ease up a bit and actually buy a new pair of shoes, or a TV.

I think we all need to 'live' and have nice things, have 'wants' once in a while. The only thing I can say is, work hard, save a little bit, and don't use plastic. I 'justify' things a lot more now, hey my truck was paid for but it needed around $1k worth of tires/brakes, etc, and I was spending triple the amount in gas as if I had a car.....so I bought a car with a small payment. If my kids were sitting on a 10 year old couch that was falling apart, you bet I'd buy a new one. But the days of buying the latest and greatest TV just for that reason are over for me!

Take it for what its worth, from a 27 year old that still has a lot to learn!!

I'd put an offer into the owner of some land that adjoins my land. It's too small a lot to build on by itself (anbout 1/2 acre, so kinda' useless to him, but if put with my land would be an ideal place to build a 3 car garage. Bad thing is he knows this and he's got me by the short hairs. I'd pay 10K, but he most likely wants twice that.

    Guess I'll never know until I ask......

A new(er) daily driver. Current dd has 235k miles, and will drive it until it hits 300k or longer if it runs that long.

If the economy was better I would buy a Bravia, a dozen OD Glocks, a waverunner and a Mercedes with a trailer hitch, a couple of tablets and a photo dropbox account. Between all of them I ought to be able be an epic thread instead of merely being able to post in someone else's epic thread.

I thought he meant discretionary luxury purchases, not necessities and staples.

I'd probably go ahead and build my Scout Rifle. I can't find a base rifle anyway, but committing to spending $1500-1800 right now would be difficult.

My wife and I are looking at property in the country, if we find something we can agree on I think we will go ahead with that. Since we are miles apart on what we want that is going to be a challenge.
I'd like a new truck but I'm not going to do that unless my Jeep dies or I get closer to retirement.

I am going both ways. Buying more stuff because prices go up/value of $ goes down. But also not buying stuff that I don't "need".

Leisure. With the cost of gas, we aren't using our motorhome.

A newer car for the wife. The 2001 is still running fine though so there's no hurry. Still will not buy new regardless of the economy.

Looked at a Savage 110BA in .338 Lapua a while back. Did a little figuring and with a proper Nightforce scope and reloading gear it looked like about a 5000.00 investment. This is one place where need really wins out over wants.

I could buy it without worries but the "what for" thought is still there.

Guns. Not because I can't afford them naw, but I'm unwilling to pay what they're going for in the current market out of principle. When things settle back down I'll start my SBR.
