So I bought my first AR a couple months ago. I didn't spend much - the Ruger AR556 was on sale. But I was realizing this morning how much that entry-level carbine really cost:
    • Rifle - $499
    • 12 Magpul magazines - $160
    • Sling Quick Release - $8
    • 1.25" thumb-adjustable sling - $20
    • Ruger 452 trigger - $108
    • Holosun HS503GU RDS - $205
    • 1500 rounds of ammo(different brands) - $400.
Assuming I haven't forgotten anything, the total is $1400. Funny how the carbine itself is only 36% of the true cost.

You should’ve bought a BCM or a DD to even out the percentages a bit :)

You can't count ammo as cost of the weapon. If that's the case I could claim my Glock 17 cost me $8000.
    Accessories maybe, but not ammo.

"True price" is a reality of almost any sport, you gotta pay to play.

How about carrying bag/case, Targets, a bipod, a lead sled?

I use a lead sled to zero my rifles. 2-3 rounds, usually.

It all adds up. I tell people it’s another $600 or more on top of a gun once you get a holster, ammunition, reloading dies, sights/scope, or trigger work/aftermarket trigger whether it’s a rifle or handgun.

Well I have a lot of goodies that I've accumulated over the years for shooting sports - I'm not just starting out. Although I did pick up some more AR500 plates and I just discovered that a scoped AR wont fit in a standard rifle case. More $.

I have way more $ "invested" in ammo & mags than I do guns.

I think it is the correct balance.

I try to buy in bulk when I see a good deal on ammo / mags - I have never regretted having the extra ammo -

You gotta get to the range too, a diesel F-250 is what? $70K - I'm not gonna buy a stinkin' used truck to take a NEW rifle to the range ! :)

It's amazing how little the cost of the gun is. I used to help people outfit for hunting trips. After the cost of the tags, transportation, guides, clothing, lodging, and miscellaneous, the cost of the gun and ammunition is sometimes insignificant.

If we're doing funky accounting, then the only serialized firearm part is the lower. You can get an Anderson for $30. 2% of your "true cost".

Seriously though, you should be thinking about it this way—you just made a nice investment into one of the most common and versatile weapons platforms out there.

personally, I think your looking at it wrong.

ammo is a consumable, that would be like taking the price of nails into account when you buy a hammer.

optics, case, mags, etc. are not specific to rifle you just bought, if you sold off just the rifle, could you use the accessories you've acquired with a different rifle?

its a bullet dispenser, the tool you need to make projectiles leave the immediate area rather quickly, anything past that is personal preference, not necessary to make it go bang.

Congrats on your first AR. You got a good rifle for $500. Some of these guys will pay that much for a designer handguard just to be able to say, "Yeah, it's an XYZ." And, your Ruger will do anything that you'll ever need.

Soldiers go to war with 7 magazines. Why did you buy 12?
