With luck (and some time?) maybe NYCDrew will forgive me for starting a thread about NYC.

So, from a "there's usually more to the story" POV, I give you:

Racial considerations aside, it appears the "stop and frisk" technique is working in NYC.

stops and frisks work for sure. So will actively throwing the entire population in jail. I guarantee there will be no crime in NY then.

Question is - when is it enough, when do people say no more?

How would you achieve the same results they did?

Unfortunately, trying to classify it by race will get you no where. You have to evaluate the stops based on the crime rates in the different areas of the city. Areas with higher crime rates will invariably have more police contacts, that is a by-product of the area and is not dependent on the race of the residents.

the percent of success on a stop is ridiculously low ..

not really a success other than a few guns got taken off the streets ..

Allow all law abiding NY citizens to carry guns any where they please.

When the residents of an area quit calling the police; because either:

-The crime rate is so low, their neighborhood doesn't get increased attention

-The non-criminal residents would rather have crime than call the cops, because the police are just going to harass and arrest non-criminals

One of the fun things about the study of statistics is that while numbers themselves can not lie they sure don't tell the whole story. However, policing is not an exact science. It can't be. Until we can read the minds of everyone and implement social controls. Though in this country, God forbid we ever get to that point. For police to target particular ethnic groups is not racist, it's statistics and this article makes a pretty good demonstration of that. Just like airports. Pulling a 87 year old woman aside for "further screening" is stupid. What percentage of grandmothers is committing acts of terrorism? Really? If a particular ethnic group is showing up on the crime radar more than another are the numbers equally racist?

And you believe that would solve it all?

    Really?

Nice to see that political correctness didn't sweep these cold, hard facts under the rug.

It would be a heck of a good start. Far better than having law abiding citizens treated like criminals and be stopped and frisked as if they're criminals.

This is by no means a monolithic site. It woud be boring as hell if we were all the same. Diversity makes us interesting.

They're running 1:8 arrests to stops ratio. That's excellent.

0.05% (five hundredths of a percent) were "machine gunes"
0.47% (forty-seven hundreths of a percent) were "assault rifles"
    9.20% were handguns
90.28% of the guns fell into the "other" category

    ...interesting.

If you think the law abiding citizens are the ones being stopped then you are as ignorant as you sound. You don't have a clue as to what goes on in the streets of NYC.

I would love to see you spend 8 hours in the back seat of an RMP, or an anti-crime unit or better yet a narcotics unit. I have commanded the last two and served many tours in the first.

You would crap your pants and go home to Momma, son.

Better you just thank the men of the NYPD for the incredible drop in crime stats and slink back under your rock.
