You see ads based on your browsing history... Most of the "sponsors" have no idea their ads are even on this specific forum.

Nope, but whatever keywords the advertiser is using are part of your Internet history in Google.
That's how Google ads works.
I spend 5 figures a year on Google ads, and my ads end up in very interesting places based on the keywords I choose. Tracing back where my website visitors and more importantly my sales come from is a large part successful advertising.
