What is the highest quality 45ACP ammo on the market today ?

The best Home defense ammo money can buy?

I'm sure i will get alot of answers involving the best ammo is a well lined up target..

But; there is so much ammo out there, i was wondering what is the best money can buy? Something tells me it will prob be military grade or police issue only..

Federal HST, Corbon DPX, or Hornady XTP.

Some of that old 230 grain Match Ball that they loaded for the Army, maybe?

I like to choose from among the three most common 230gr 45ACP rounds used by Law Enforcement because they are the most frequently tested under real-world conditions and studied in actual shootings with published findings.
    • Winchester Ranger-T 230gr JHP
    • Federal HST 230gr +P JHP
    • Speer Gold Dot 230gr JHP
Although I currently carry Speer Gold Dot 230gr JHP in my G30SF, Winchester Ranger-T comes out on top for expansion and penetration in the FBI Protocol Heavy Clothing Test⁽¹⁾ based on the latest ATK Wound Ballistic Workshop data I reviewed from May, 2009 (see below). It's interesting to note that ATK owns Speer and Federal, and Winchester is their competitor. The ATK Wound Ballistic Workshop data can be relied upon to be unbiased.

The ballistic test I look at most carefully is the simulation of heavy clothing over bare gelatin because that is a better fit for the actual SD situation I'm likely to encounter as a civilian CHL holder. Tests through barriers (auto glass, wallboard and plywood) are more of interest to LE. I want to know how well the JHP expands after passing through heavy clothing. If a JHP round routinely plugs up and fails to expand (becoming ball ammo) it's one to avoid.

As an aside note, Mas Ayoob carries Winchester Ranger-T 230gr JHP in his Glock 30.

    Winchester Ranger-T 230gr JHP (RA45T)
    • Penetration: 13.75 inches
    • Expansion (Avg): 0.922 inch
    Federal HST 230gr +P JHP (P45HST1)
    • Penetration: 13.0 inches
    • Expansion (Avg): 0.824 inch
Speer Gold Dot 230gr JHP (53966)
    • Penetration: 13.5 inches
    • Expansion (Avg): 0.673 inch

    Footnotes

    1.
FBI Protocol Heavy Clothing Test: The gelatin block is covered with four layers of clothing: One layer of cotton T-shirt (48 threads per inch); one layer of cotton shirt material (80 threads per inch); a 10 ounce down comforter in cambric shell cover (232 threads per inch); and one layer of 13 ounce cotton denim (50 threads per inch). This simulates typical cold weather wear. The block is shot at ten feet, measured from the muzzle to the front of the block.

Federal Gold Match and Black Hills red box are probably the best FMJ ammo available. I like Winchester Ranger T-series, or Speer Gold Dot.

So much so that Federal replaced it with their HST round as their primer LE round. The Hydro Shock is old tech.

    Ammunitiontogo.com usually has it.

Federal won't sell it to non LE, but it's not illegal to own. Many places that deal with LE will sell you their over stock.

I'm sorry, I did not post that trying to be "cocky". I just remember reading it in a few different places. But......it has been years ago. Improvements are always being made. The older I get the more time gets away from me. LOL. The guys simply looking for high grade ammo figuered I would throw that out there.

In all fairness, the hydro shock for it's time was an excellent round and it still is. There are just better ones now, Federal's own HST, is the hydro shocks replacement.

One of the newer bonded rounds.Look at the price point. Avoid the low recoil stuff.
