I have documents that I scanned a long time ago which are in image format rather than as documents. I'm wondering if there's software out there that can look at an image and recognize it as a text document and then put it into DOC/PDF/etc format so that it can be searched through or edited as a document.

    Thanks!

It's called OCR, for Object Character Recognition. This software came with my scanner:

Don't know if it's the best, but it works and there's a trial option.

I use this program also, it is very good for what you are wanting to do.

The trial option leaves some some stuff to desired but the full version works well.

My knowledege is somewhat limited, but I think that OCR (Optical Character Recognition) will not work with some image formats. The one I use, Read Iris will take a .pdf and convert it to a Word doc. If the file is a .jpg, I think you may have to print the file, then run it through a scanner with OCR software. That will convert it to a Word file that is searchable.

From what I have seen, specific OCR applications may only work with specific file formats, but that's just their little quirks. Most of them will at least recognize and work with TIFs. If you have a JPEG, you can just convert it to a TIF using IrfanView.

I have always used TextBridge (it came with the scanner) and it works great for me.

Thanks for the info, everyone. Looks like I've got a couple options to try.
