Unclear if charges will be filed?

What charges? Last I checked, "stupidity" wasn't a crime.

I do not mess with snakes let them be. Most people bit by snakes are messing with them.

Depends where he was, could be illegal discharge of a firearm or something similar.

A minor had possession of a firearm
    someone was shot

To some, with the news agencies heavily represented in this subset of people, either one of those two obviously requires charges of some sort and it's baffling to the reporters that someone's not already been charged with "something".

    Cute.

How many states have laws against storage of a firearm so that it's obtainable by a minor being a crime in and of itself? Dunno about SC but it's a viable consideration if you're writing the story.

To some, again heavily represented in the news business, no registration or "It is unknown if it was registered to the person" is a common statement even in states that do not have registration. Same with this.

I didn't write the story, someone asked what charges the author could be talking about so I made a couple suggestions.

    Wait.

    What?

    He fired.
The dog jumped out of his hand.
The shot he had fired already hit his hand?

    HUH?!?!?!?

This is the kind of thing that propagates the myths. Tell a lie often enough and it becomes the truth.

The state I live people THINK its illegal for a minor to have a handgun but in this case, the person was in his own home. (of course it happened in a different state and not familiar with SC laws)

    (1) (a) Except as provided in this section, it is unlawful for any person who has not attained the age of eighteen years knowingly to have any handgun in such person's possession.

    (2) This section shall not apply to:

    (b) Any person under the age of eighteen years who is on real property under the control of such person's parent, legal guardian, or grandparent and who has the permission of such person's parent or legal guardian to possess a handgun;

(ps there are many more exceptions, I just chose the pertinent one)

He's lucky Ma did not own a 10mm. If she had, we'd be reading about a dead kid, dead dog, dead snake and destroyed neighborhood.

As far as the actual story from the kid:

I was going to point out the same line.

Another uneducated schmuck who relies on spellcheck vs. possession of any true knowledge. :)

I'll bet the snake was moving, the gun was moving to keep the sights on the snake,

the hand holding the dog leash was not moving because the dog was not, the gun

hand traversed the dog leash hand as the trigger was being squeezed.

Great excitement about shooting the snake which didn't need to be shot.

No awareness of his surroundings and even of the position of his dog leash hand.

More excitement about shooting the pistol than killing the snake.

Dog was the only thing in this story that appeared to have any sense.

Story made up afterwards so the shooter wouldn't look stupid. (It's not my fault!)
