A friend of mine bought a Romanian AK - I assume it's a WASR - with very poorly finished furniture. What's worse, the stock seems short-ish - not comfortable to hold, and I am not tall (5'10"), he's about that height too.

Anyway, is there a replacement stock for AK ? Something like an adjustable stock I saw on someone's AR ? Or, is there some kind of end extension ? I think adding just 1" would make a difference.

If your buddy has his heart set on swapping the stock it can be a real PITA. When I swapped the wood on mine I literally ended up having to cut off the old stock flush with the end of the trunions, then I drilled out roughly 90% of the wood left inside the rear of the receiver, then pried the rest out with a small chisel and a pair of needle nose pliers. As I said, a real PITA but it is doable if you've got the tools and the gumption. Again, this was a worst case scenario but go into it prepared to fight it.

You could always get lucky and disassemble the rifle, remove the two tang/trunion screws, and slip the stock right off.

I changed out my crappy, short WASR stock & handguards with an Arsenal NATO length stock from Midway. The complete set is around $100. Stock only is about $44. It really makes a heck of a difference.

The old stock can be a PITA to get off. I removed the two trunion screws & the ugly thing was stuck on pretty good, so I drove 2 wood screws halfway into both sides of the old stock, then tapped on them with a mallet a few times & the POS popped off pretty easily.

HOW TO REMOVE A STUCK AK BUTT STOCK:
(Some clever fellow posted this on another site - works like a charm!)

1. Clear weapon.

2. Remove butt stock screws.

3. Grab rifle by the barrel.

4. SMACK BUTT SHARPLY ON SOFT BUT FIRM OBJECT - a bed is suggested. Swing, batter, swing! Smack it good, on the edge of the butt. Rotate 180 degrees, smack the side of the stock, keep doing it. (You may want to wait until the wife is away to do this - she might not like seeing you beat your gun on her bed.) It may take several dozen hits or only a few. But observe the space between the butt stock and metal grow slightly larger with each swing. Once the space is approximately 1/2" - 3/4" between wood and metal, the stock is about ready to come out, so give it a try now and keep doing it if you have to.

Never fails!
