Doesn't sound to me like that would be the venue to discuss such things.

BTW, Police Chiefs put their pants on one leg at a time, just like you and me. Go and enjoy the festivities.

Show him your gun! That'll break the ice with him. And then argue ballistics with him so he will remember you later.

    1. Relax. I mean it relax. GT sports a nice cadre of movers and shakers - none of them are likely impressed with wide eyed fanboys.

    2. Pay close attention to his reactions and body language. If he wants to talk he'll let you know. Lots of leaders of men are "expressive" personalities. He may want to talk. Just as likely he may appreciate you noticing that he's had a ball busting day and wants to keep to himself.

    3. Firm handshake, look him in the eye, let him lead the conversation, be concise with your words.

As someone else said the man puts his pants one one leg at a time. Be yourself.

Do not mention anything about employment at this function. If you get into conversation with the chief and he brings it up then your good to go but until then be polite and professional keep quiet and don't volunteer unsolicited information.

    Open carry! It solves everything!

Also, He is just a guy like you. Don't bring up employment unless he brings it up first. Have a good time.

    Don't gush.

Don't get drunk and puke on his shoes.

Firm handshake, eye contact, "Hiya, pleased to meetcha."

Do NOT mention that his wife/daughter/niece/cousin/significant other/secretary is 'hot'.

    Don't say anything about 'hats'.

Find a way to establish dominance!

Nah, it's been said before, just try to relax. Don't force the conversation, and personally I also wouldn't bring up the job thing, or if you do, do it towards the end of the conversation.

If your uncle brings it up, address it, but don't harp. Just say that you're interested in applying and look forward to the opportunity to work with his department.

Personally, I can't help myself and end up calling every Chief or Sheriff "Sir," at least until told not to. Let your conscience be your guide on that one, I guess.

    Good luck!

Mine just retired. He was a Sergeant when I hired on, so, we were always pretty easy going with each other, but, in public, I always addressed him as Chief. In private, it was always "boss" or Chief, but, a less formal "Chief" if that makes sense. Delivered more as a nickname.

Other Chiefs, always a good handshake and "Chief, (my rank and name) Its good to meet you Sir."

Once had the opportunity to meet Daryl Gates. Usual greeting (he had long ago retired, but, he would always carry that title in my opinion) Spent close to 45 minutes chatting with him. Looked for the "Go away boy, you're bothering me, clues. Never saw them. Really a good guy.

The celebration went well for the undersheriff, but the Chief did not show up. I understand they are busy official people. Thanks for the suggestions.
