    Hi all,

I got volunteered again for a week's OB in Subic. Nicest part of last week's proceedings was when the US Navy came calling.

    USS Essex (LHD-2)

The USS Essex's "Tilly" aircraft-handling crane, every US flattop has one.

Couldn't get any closer, the area beside the ships were under strict guard.

Near the lighthouse, a line of USMC AAV7A1 amtracs were parked.

Did you happen to go up to Cubi? Just curious what B CO Marine Barracks still looks like? NavMag? How about Olongapo?

I just drove past the Cubi airport. Next time I'll look for the barracks you are referring to, and also those monkeys at the roadside. I promised myself a more extensive tour next time, perhaps before June.

    Anyway here's more:
A late afternoon view of the USS Essex:

The three together: USS Essex, USS Harpers Ferry, and LCU 1634.

There was another ship aft of the Essex...

I was too far away to catch more than just a glimpse of the ship aft of the Essex, but I finally saw her in her entirety when she left dock, the USS Denver (LPD-9):

The USS Essex and USS Harpers Ferry had left sometime earlier.

Thanks! Forgot to add that it was awfully hot, after I took the photos I scuttled back to the hotel ASAP. At least those USMC amtrac crews had the benefit of at least two enterprising ice cream vendors who approached them...

Afternoon view of the same CH-46 earlier, this time with the side door open:

There were some civilians on the flight deck of the Essex taking pictures, probably guests. I wasn't that fortunate...

I'll try to get photos of the naval magazine area and Marine barracks for walangkatapat next time I'm up there. BTW that Vought F-8 Crusader fighter that used to grace the crossroads has disappeared, last time I saw it, it was sitting in an open lot near the duty-free stores, now it's gone.

And a bit of OT, for those who like Ox & Palm corned beef (the best corned beef ever IMO), it's now available there again.:eat:

While at the SCTEX, I observed a C-130 landing at Clark, even from far away it was definitely not ours, four (4) instead of two (2) fuel tanks under the wings, probably a USMC KC-130.
