I was watching a show on Netflix about off-road vehicles called Dirt Every Day.

Anyway - the episodes I watched they are building the off-road vehicles.

    Episode 1 - Modifying a $1900 Toyota Land Cruiser for off-road
Episode 2 - Building an old Army pickup (as in bought from the military) to operate off road - getting it running
Episode 3 - Army truck - Modifying the Army truck with better axles, suspension, front diff locker, etc. All cool so far.

    And then....
Episode 4 - the inspiration of this thread - they took this old, beat to absolute hell Army pickup from episodes 2 and 3, rust and all, plucked out the 6.2L Diesel engine that was good but anemic (I get why they wanted to change engines), and stuffed a GM LSA 6.2L V8 - all $15000 worth - into it.

I get wanting the power, but that just seemed....wrong.

This is the truck, AFTER the swap:

Overall not bad. It has some rust. The roof cam shows a rusted spot in the hood, and they showed some on the body. All fixable though and none compromises the bones of the truck I assume.

But seriously - the engine cost 10x as much as the body! I'd have gotten a hopped-up 350 or 454 in there. I know it won't be as refined (a selling point for the LSA), but you're rolling around on 36-ish tires, solid axles, and leaf springs. How refined does it need to get???
    :wow:

(That said, GM probably gave them that engine).

And NOBODY noticed that I had two Episode 2s in my OP? Seriously? You guys are slipping....

Sounds like Dirt Everyday but that is on Youtube. If it is a different show on Netflix please let us know the name I am interested and can't find it.

you can get LS___ engines in great low mileage condition all day long starting at 6-800.00 the swap was for show, but it does make sense I think the running gear on those trucks is 3/4 ton with a very stout rear axle.

Maybe just me but I do not really see that as an Army pickup as much as I see it as an '80s General Motors pickup that the Army bought 50,000 of, enough so that they could have GM spray pain them a gorgeous if not shiny green hue. I think of this as an Army pickup truck

An odd engine choice is when they put a non turb V6 in a Full sized Buick Electra Duce and a 1/4 4 holer.

Interesting. Putting Diesels in classic cars is actually very popular in Cuba. They can't get parts to maintain most stuff, but they can get parts for Toyota Diesel engines.

That's it. It is on Netflix now too.

Not this one. I did a quick Google search and the cheapest LSA I could find was $13,000. Plus all the other stuff you need (controller, intercooler, etc).

I'm guessing one could be had for cheaper but I still think it's a strange combination.

I'm guessing someone at GM had some input into this, at some level. Either gave them the engine or a good discount on it.

Or they did it just to gain interest. I guess putting in something more mainstream for that truck would be kinda boring.

Personally I'd look into a Cummins or Duramax, if it could be done without going completely crazy. Otherwise I'd either mod the 6.2L Diesel or fit a built 350 or 454.

Usually I am enamored of most anything Vette or Vette powered. Usually. But not absolutely always.

I think we all know that a true Floridian would be impressed with that. The wing alone is an exquisite example of the gator vernacular.
