My HP DVD writer has quit "seeing" DVD disks.

The drive works normally with CD-R/RW disks but when I put in any DVD disk, (commercial movie, home burned or blank disk) it's as if the drive is empty.

HP's on line "Instant Support" has been running me in circles for two days reinstalling the driver, changing the Registry, etc, etc, they even told me Imation and Memorex DVD disks won't work in a HP writer.
(I had already burned I & M and HP DVD disks when the writer was working)
Then when HP's "Instant Support" runs out of ideas they don't answer you again. :(

I told them I tried swapping the DVD writers between computers and the HP does the same thing in my Compaq.
The NEC writer (from my Compaq) worked normally in the HP computer.
The fact that the burner doesn't work in 2 computers doesn't seem important;Q

Anyone had a DVD writer with this problem?

I had a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive in a laptop once and had a similar problem (wouldn't read DVDs). I was told that the DVD laser was toast. I ended up getting a different drive.

M2, do you happen to have DVD's that are of different regions?

If you do, and IIRC, there is a counter built into the drives that counts down everytime you insert DVD's of different regions. The final count sets the region to what is currently playing in your drive.

If you can remember, try playing the last DVD that you were able to watch before the problem arose. ;)

    HTH. Good luck.

After two and a half days I finally talked to a live person.

He tried to run me through all the stuff I had already done three or four times.

He finally gave up, he still didn't know what is wrong with the drive but and said they would send me a new one.

    podwich,
I figured my problem was something like that but trying to convince "customer support" is something else.;Q

    mc_oliver,
As far as I know the DVD's aren't from different regions.

i've had better support from gateway for my laptop.
as far as region, even if you change the region, you should be able to see the files from explorer, even if you can't play the movie.

i have never seen non region 1 in the US. if you really want to test it hard, play some porn movie. they're regionless, it plays on any dvd player, anywhere in the world. ;)
