My parents bought a new TV. It's a standard tube, garden variety TV.

When there is very bright or white scene (such as an explosion or a bright white cloud), they get a burst of static sound. When there is any other scene on TV, the sound is OK.

What can be the cause of this?

And is this what they call white noise?

    How would I fix it?

Is it a hissing noise from the picture tube?It could be something in the power supply of the TV.The current demand may be higher with very light colors.

Could be the ac/dc filter in the power supply is not filtering properly and the ac cycle hum is being picked up by the sound system. If it is new they should exchange it.It could a be a bad design if it's a cheaper TV.My parents have bad hearing and keep the volume turned up so those things stand out even more.

Lots of sets exhibit this behavior. I an guessing that it is due to the guns in the CRT running at maximum to light all the screen as intensely as possible, and while doing so they are straining the power supply the TV contains.

    So you get the noise.

If it gets too loud have them RMA it.

After experimenting, lowering the contrast and the brightness a few notches has fixed the problem.
