So they're going to eliminate the gas tax because this will take its place. After all the more you drive, the more gas you use so the more you already pay in taxes, right?

    right?

This has been rumored and discussed for several years now..
I fear that Americans will quietly accept having government track where, how far, and how often we drive or otherwise travel.

The technology to do so is available..

This is the law of unintended consequences. "Green" politicians push for more efficient cars and trucks. More efficient cars means less fuel purchased. Less fuel means less fuel taxes collected. Politicians realize their losing their golden egg, and seek to replace it with a miles-driven tax, which also allows the fedcoats to track every car by GPS, for example.

Total information awareness under the guise of "going green".

I've got wirecutters, soldering iron, multimeter, logic state analyzer and a digital oscilloscope...

The black market will naturally introduce any number of ways and devices to defeat vehicle tracking...

You could make the case though that making a full-auto sear for an AR is easy and there is a ready market for it...

Enforcement of the required automatic weapon license and tax stamp is tough, but few violate the applicable statutes because the penalties are severe.

You'd also probably have more people deducting mileage on their taxes since it's tracked already.

This. Now toss in electric cars and the revenue stream is even lower. I think it is reasonable to have a "consumption/use based" tax, I'm just not sure there is a reasonable way to collect the information without infringing on individual rights. Would we have both the Fed and individual states trying to collect from us?

This isn't about taxes or revenue, that's just the guise being used. It's about control, pure and simple. The idea is to force people into accepting mass transit as an alternative to driving. It's about forcing people to give up yet more of their civil liberties and freedoms... all for the greater good of course!

If we did not all know you so well your post would appear at first glance to be a suggestion that the law be ignored in some cases... :wow:

That's the CO2 tax, exhaling really. The inhaling tax is coming with the mileage taxes.
