Many of you are familiar with the concept of having a standby gun that is as close to your EDC as possible in the event that you lose the EDC to an evidence bin after a good shoot. The idea is that in an unfortunate situation where you used your EDC and the police had held it for evidence for a period of time, you have a standby that is very similar that you can just begin to carry until you get the original one back.

For those of you that follow that philosophy, how close do you get your standby gun to your EDC? Is it enough to have a similar trigger feel and holster compatibility, say by having a G27 as a standby for your G23, or are you even more relaxed and consider something like a G19 to be a decent standby for your G23? Or, do you duplicate the EDC completely so that you don't skip a beat should your EDC get used and put on hold?

When I was a lawman I had two of everything just for that reason. Even a good shoot and your S&W Model 15 will in ballistics for a few days. So fast forward 35 years.

I got a Glock 19 that is an EDC but a Glock 17 or a 26 can be substituted without any significant changes. Same platform, caliber and holster.

I have a SW 640 and 442 (and 38, and 36, and...)

I have a 2.75” 66 and a 2”Model 10

Commander and compact 1911’s

And my duty gun will be replaced should mine be used and claimed as evidence with another G17

I only have one double. I have quite a few similar gun platforms. "Big and little" is a common theme in my gun collection. G19/G26, etc.

The larger tends to serve range/HD duty. The smaller pulls the lion's share of carry time.

I've got a crap-load of guns, mostly Glocks. I shoot a lot and try to stay proficient even with other brands (SIG, 1911, revolvers {& even shotgun}).

I mainly carry a G19Gen5, but have the Gen3 & Gen4 versions, too. If not carry the G19Gen5, I'll likely be carrying a G26 or G17 (whichever Gen I pull out of the safe to holster). I will carry other calibers on occasion so they don't feel ignored in the dark safe.

I had one instructor who did say "It's a Glock. They all feel the same." It's basically true for my dozen-or-so Glocks, at least to me, and the trigger pulls are all ~0.5 pound to each. Well one is ~1 lighter (the G34Gen3).

I've had various guns go down for repair, parts, replacement, and even held in police property (some of my guns were stolen, then recovered) over the years. It's good to have alternate guns for spares.

I don't have an EDC at the moment, but got a G41 here at the desk and one in my hunting bag. Got an unfired G41 put away, but don't know if I'll keep or trade for a G40, which is the same size as the 41, frame wise. Back in 2014 and 15, the wife and I both carried G36's, but those are gone, now. If I got another carry, I'd prolly want a double.

I lost my HD Mossberg to the evidence room September 2016. I loaded up one of my Winchester 1897s until I could buy an 870 Wingmaster. If for some reason I lost my Commander I would probably buy another just like it.

If you have an exact duplicate of your primary, and you take it with you to a match, you don't need to worry about which tools and which spare parts you might need to take with you. This precaution - bringing a back-up - can offer you a peace of mind that is priceless.

At minimum I'd want same controls. Could use XD or Glock interchangeably, but agree with preference for same holster and mags. For me it's G23 for primary carry, grip-chopped police trade G22 for spare and HD. Both have same I-Dot Pro sights and factory innards.

My main carry is a gen2 G-23, with another G-23 on standby,
Alternate carry gen2 G-19 and another on standby.
G-21 in nightstand, and Mossburg 500 in corner for things that go bump in the night.
G-17 in family room, G-22 near the front door.
