My youngest (12 y.o.) of 3 sons is the first to show an interest in hunting so we're going to start with squirrels. Picked up a Midland 20ga, 26 inch for $119 and took out the spacers. Kicks a bit, being so light but I really like the gun. Better than I expected. Gun safety lessons started today.

I was a "gun nut" so I don't recall not having some kind of projectile shooting device but my first firearm(after BB, pellet) was a Ruger 10/22, that I still have. I think I got a 12ga around age 16. It's been a long time. As for the learning part, I got some rudimentary instructions but a stack of gun magazines is probably the mains source of learning early on.

Sounds like fun, do you have some good hunting close to home?
    I've never hunted.

I've got a spot about 6 miles away. Plenty of hardwoods. Haven't hunted it before but it should be good at 30 acres of woods. All my old haunts have changed hands so I had to call a buddy.

Squirrel hunting is one of the best ways to experience the woods in a deep, personal way and to start learning about hunting and gun safety.

The sights and sounds and smells of the early morning woods when you're tuned into every shaking branch or other clue that a squirrel may be nearby are amazing. The awareness that comes with squirrel hunting also opens our eyes and ears to the presence of all other critters and the beauty of the woods.

Standing near a hickory tree with 'cuttings' coming down like rain is a truly exciting experience. Its fun. Its being immersed in nature in a way most 'city folk' never experience. Its an opportunity to take home meat for dinner the same way frontiersmen did. Its a time to follow safety rules when our heart is pounding with excitement and our finger wants to be on the trigger.

Good for you for making the wonderful experience of squirrel hunting available to your son. I'm guessing he will never forget it, and neither will you.

Are there no serious squirrel hunters left at GT? Have we become so urbanized that roaming the woods in August in search of hickory trees loaded with nuts and with cuttings underneath is no longer a highlight of summer?

I hope we haven't lost the passion for one of life's best outdoor experiences. Maybe the good hunting woods have been taken by development. Or, maybe the anti-hunting sentiment has caused most woods to be posted. Maybe there are too many competing activities that are more fun or require less effort.

I'm sure glad I grew up in a simpler time when roaming the woods and small game hunting were an important part of my life.

You probably lose leaves by then, being up there around the artic circle. We break out the .22 after the leaves fall.

I grew up with squirrel as part of my regular diet. There was no season for them, and we hunted the woods behind our place with .22s every few weekends.

Don't eat the brains though. Squirrels in more and more regions are believed to carry a human form of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

You may be able to find some low recoil shells for that 20 if you want. Squirrels aren't that tough and they should work fine for the youngster. Squirrel hunting is great and one of the things it teaches is patience. Good luck!

Love squirrel season more than deer season.
