What exactly is the purpose of a square slide? Why not make it contoured to the barrel.

Beretta seems to have addressed this with the PX4, and even the XDm has cut a 'little off the top'. Not trying to start anything but just curious.

Think it's more about having a certain amount of mass in the slide to make the pistol funtion than anything to do with looks or cost savings,

Lot of 1911's out there with light weight alloy frames, but the slides are steel for the wieght. Likewise with Glocks..plastic frame, but solid slide. Think if you tried to counteract the recoil forces with a heavier recoil spring you may end up with something that would need Charles Atlas to cycle!

Flat sides lend themselves better to the slide rails used on most. Those that don't use the rails, like Ruger .22's are sometimes round.

Makes it a b~ to find a holster if it's a common gun layout but uncommon slide feature...

*Shakes first at where Sig GSR 1911 used to be prior to Thanksgiving Day Burglary*

I had a check in my HAND for it's sale too. Argh. Also, two Bladetech holsters still available. PM me. =)

Gaston left nothing to chance. It's a redundancy. When your cheap-*** plastic sights go tango uniform, you'll still have a nice, flat sighting surface.

Exactly. Also, it is much easier to cast and mill a rectangular thing than a round thing.

If you have a grip that feels like a piece of 2x4, you might as well make the slide in the same style.

Luckily, after all these years and Glocks and rounds and matches and training and qualification, etc., that has only happened to people I read about on Glocktalk.

I've had the white dot fall out, but never saw a sight fly off. Saw someone rip one off his G26 with a cleaning rod trying to unstick a round from the chamber.
