So far in my search for a new motorcycle I've seen Katanas from the '90s for under $2000 as well as a CBR900RR in that range. Can anyone here suggest any other 600-1000 cc bikes that can be had for under $2000? That is the absolute maximum I can spend (and that's realllly stretching it). I'm really looking for something for $1600 or less. Suggestions?

    Check your local Craigslist obsessively?

Yes, I do. All the time. Problem is that I won't have the money until my Yugo AK sells, along with some other stuff.

The Katana is a good bike for the money. It's what I started out riding on the street with. Suzuki Bandits are good as well. There's always the Ninja 500. They're dog ugly and nowhere near as good of bikes as the other two, but they're pretty much bulletproof.

If your local craigslist isn't too stocked up on bikes, you can try searchtempest.com. It will allow you to search multiple craigslist sites at once out to a specified distance from your zip code.

I started on a Katana also. I took a look at the Bandit just now and it looks like something I might like, at least until I save for something I really want. Thanks for the suggestion. :)

www.crazedlist.org lets you search multiple cities on craigslist too. Pretty cool.

Do you have a preference as to engine/body type? Or just trying to find a cheap, but fun, alternative to the cage/automobile? I see deals ALL the time on CL and some other local riding forums. But in my search I had to either settle for a nice/new 600-750cc, or an older and/or dropped 1000cc. I also had a set budget. I stumbled on a really good deal on a GSXR600, and figured I could always upgrade from there.

What type of riding do you plan on doing? And if you don't mind my asking, what's your body type/weight? With both in consideration, you can narrow down your choices quite a bit before even making price a factor.

A Buell Blast would probably be an option as well.

    Mmmmm...Magnas. ;)

Yamaha Maxims are amazing bikes. Been trying to get my buddy who has one circa 85/86 to sell his to me but he won't budge. It's scary good for a bike that old.

Also, early 1980s Yamaha Seca 750 (not Seca II) should be pretty cheap.

It'd be a rarity to find an SV1000 for less than $2000 (that's what I ride). A first generation SV650 might be in the cards though.

When I was shopping around for my first sportbike (HAD to be a naked Ducati) what I did was have a bundle of cash I was willing to spend. Then I made a shortcut in my browser that linked to a craigslist search for ducatis under my price limit. I would then click that button hourly or whenever. When a great deal comes along, you gotta JUMP on it. Having the cash ready to go is required so you can call the person and set up a meeting and buy it on the spot if everything is on the up and up.

Right now I'm just trying to get something for this riding season. The plan is to ride the cheap bike this year while saving money until next riding season, at which point I'll sell the one I'm going te get this year. I just want something to ride for now.

It's mostly going to be city riding (which sucks) but I've heard there are some good twisties in the area. I love cruisers, but I don't want one as my only bike because I also love to ride the twisties. I'm looking for more of a sportbike or a sport tourer. I'm of an average build, 5'10" 165lbs.

I recently sold my 2001 Suzuki Bandit 600s for $2K.
Incidently, I had purchased it 4 years earlier for $2K as well.

Great bike. No way he'll find one under $2000 though, not unless it's been crashed and written off.

Yamaha YZF600R, not the R6. Comfortable, plenty of power, good for commuting, touring. and some curves.
