Today I had a friend that fired unexpectedly at close range and I had no ear protection. Immediately thereafter I couldn't hear well at all and everything was distorted and tinny. Sounds are like they are coming from the bottom of a barrel. The volume has improved somewhat but everyone sounds robotic or like Darth Vader when they talk. No pain really, just the annoying robot sounds and sensitivity to loud noises.

Has anyone experienced this before? If so, does it get back to normal over a period of time. Please, any advice or opinions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Richard

Where were you standing? to the side? super-sonic round?

May have busted ear drum. Get thee to a Dr. - really, go to a Doctor.

+1 on the doctor. Don't take a chance with your hearing. If you have physical damage, which is a possibility, he will be able to treat it and prevent infection. The ear is very fragile.

Thanks for the response. Right side but behind. Affected both ears exactly the same.

My opinion is that you damaged your hearing. Only time will tell how much...

seriously go to a ENT SOON AS POSSIBLE. dont mess around with ears

i remember as a kid mowing grass , never wore ear protection , hell back then it was not even mentioned, but now i use ear protection with everything,

this past summer i was mowing my moms yard and took ear protector off for a second , and i was like DAMN , its a big difference as you never know how loud it is until you block it for awhile .

Thanks for the responses. I'm seeing my regular doctor this morning. The doctor would have to refer to me an ENT. I'll report on it afterwards.

Doctor said neither ear drum was ruptured, however I was referred to an ENT for further observation. The referral won't be done for another two business days so hopefully by then I'll stop hearing adults talk like robots and little kids sounding like the Chipmunks.

    Update:

Got my referral for an ENT but haven't setup an appointment. My hearing seemed to get better over the weekend and would have to say it's pretty much back to normal now. I do feel pressure sometimes like their is fluid build up but is not unusual for me to experience from time to time.

Your fine, I had this happen once when I was younger and decided to stand between a hill and my pickup while firing a .357 maximum. Lasted about 3 days. Now I uassually don't forget hearing protection. If you hear a faint ringing however that won't go away, ever.

you can get another (smarter) friend, not so with hearing......

decide which is more important for you to keep.
