Personally I feel like any run of the mill 9mm round isn't harsh with a g19 or g26, however I have a friend intersted in shooting for the first time and wanted to know what factory loads can be bought that are "low recoil" as he is very timid about shooting (yes he will shoot my .22 first). It got me curious.

Obviously this would be for learning purposes and I'd like to honor his wishes so he doesn't shy away from the wonderful world of shooting.

Your thoughts on what you consider low recoil factory loads?

Federal Champion 115 FMJ (Walmart sells it) is one of the lowest recoiling 9mm ammo I've found. It clocks around 1069 fps.

Start him off on something bigger, .45ACP or .40cal. After shooting something with a heavier recoil, the 9mm will feel like nothing.

Here is a tip for your "friend"...

The 147gr 9mm seems to have less perceived recoil than lighter loads for many shooters

And here is the real amazing tip...

The 147 gr HP loads can outperform lighter, faster loads in ballistic gel or other tests.

Funny you mention that because honestly having fired around 5k rounds of 9mm in the past few years, I've never tried 147 gr yet. Mostly it's just been 115 gr and 125 gr ammo. I'll have to pick some up to try myself, you have me curious.

And an even more amazing tip......they have a long history of not being worth a damn for stopping bad guys.

Tell that to the Police Departments that issue the 147gr 9mm.

147 grain FMJ factory loads from Federal, Winchester or Speer (Lawman) are often the preferred loads for action pistol competition shooters who desire a soft-shooting, accurate load.

I shoot with the Federal ammo wally world sells. Not because I'm a puss but because it's cheap and not terribly dirty. That stuff and WWB (or so I hear).

Let him shoot what ever. I was worried the first time I shot a pistol but it isn't bad for even small hand shooters.
