So who's carrying an old school weapon still?

This morning, I went to the academy and qualified with my Glock 35, and realized how sterile and boring regular qualification had become. When I got back to the station, I went up to my locker, pulled out my old Smith & Wesson 645 and put in back into service. Carried it all day. Felt good carrying an all steel gun again.

I got this handgun brand new from Smith and Wesson in 1984 as part of a law enforcement prototype trial. So, here we are 26 years later and still being carried. Anyone else carrying an old school weapon in actual service?

Chief Beck carries a stainless steel smith in a swivel holster, cant get much saltier then that, although Chief gates carried his roscoe in a flap over holster till he retired...

I carry a swivel holster too... always have. I don't recall Chief Gates wearing a flap holster, and I worked for him.
Wow...I wish I still had my 645. Bought one back in my Don Johnson days because I couldn't afford a Bren 10. Packed it in a 070 Safariland on duty and a Jackass shoulder rig off duty. Sadly, its what I traded for my first Glock back in the late 80s. Had the same Pachmeyer grips....thanks for bringing back some good memories.
I'd carry my P220 if I could but am restricted to .40 only, so Glock 23 for now.

P229 on order so I can carry a real gun again! :p

The more things change the more things stay the same... My first gun I ever carried was a Series 70 Colt back in 1979. Carried the 645 for a few years (carried it as a pilot for S&W before wide-scale release). Eventually wound up with a Glock, but now back to my 645, and next year, we transition back to the 1911 platform. I came in with a 1911, and will probably go out with a 1911. Four decades in between.
I started with a 4506, and this year retired my G22 I carried for 10 or 11 years and went back to a single stack .45 (Sig P220).

I shoot it better than my Glock 22, but that is really semantics. I think the loaded pistol plus two mags is lighter than the old rig.

May I suggest replacing the ugly phillips screw assembly with a third gen safety assembly? You won't have to worry about the screw backing out, and it will be about three times cooler looking.

Yeah, I went up to the armory yesterday and asked them to do just that. The gunsmith on duty was new and didn't have much experience with the old school guns. I am going to go back up there when one of the older gunsmiths is working and ask him to do it.
I had a 745 for a while, and really liked the trimmer feel and more aggressive checkering in contrast to the 4506-1's I have owned.

Okay, I admit I had a 4563TSW too, I have a real soft spot for S&W 45's. I might add that none of mine have ever jammed on me.
Even tho retired, now, i sometimes carry a newly acquired Dan Wesson revo in .357. Keep in in my truck, at my right hand.

Not a thing wrong with a good revolver. I might bring mine back out after awhile.
I carry a Glock 22 on duty, but still qualify with my S&W 4506, even after all these years it still shoots great, I sent it to S&W a while back, had it refinished and checked over, it has never failed once. Sometimes you just have to strap on a real pistol! LOL!
I had a 645, never could quite get used to what felt to me like an awkward grip angle on it though. Traded it in on a 4506 when they came out and carried that as a duty gun for a few years.
My G21 was made in 1993 and purchased new for duty use by a Sgt (now retired) in a neighboring dept. It's been a cop gun it's whole life and has 17 years on the job. I've got 4...

Not sure if that counts as salty but I think it's pretty neat. Trust my life to it every night.

When Glocks first came out and there were some rumblings about trying them out, I swore I would quit the job before they made me carry a plastic gun with a toy gun trigger. Guess I was wrong.... But then again, I just put my Glock in the drawer and went back to my old gun so maybe not.
I think Glock is for the most part a well made gun. It is basically a good all around service weapon or off duty weapon for that matter. I still want to get a good steel gun one day, or maybe just get myself another old revolver in decent shape.
Does a 2 year old Colt 1991A1 count? Does it help if I tell you the front sight is staked in place? GI guide rod?

As for Crockett and his 645/4506....

Ohhhh.....yeah. That's the stuff! Nothing like a little 'ole 12 gauge street sweeper get-right. I never was one for the Testarossa though. I thought the Daytona was a bit classier.

By the way, anyone catch what looks like a Detonics in the ankle holster? Sweet......
Even Crocket and Tubbs have looks of shock after shooting down the plane...

For those that are more old school than I, how do you write a report about shooting down a plane, in the middle of a city?
My P220 is pretty old school, except for the cheese-grater light rail.
