I am near completion on my Saiga 7.62x39 conversion, and I took it out to my wife's family's farm to function test it. Most of my wife's family was there for Easter dinner, and her brother and father are AR owners, but I wouldn't call them gun guys. They both looked at my Saiga earlier in the day. First AKs I think they've ever held. After I'd gone out to shoot, my wife overheard them talking and they said that my AK probably won't last past 1,000 rounds. :faint:

So, how many rounds have you put through your AK?

A nominal 700 through my wasr and about 400 through my 5.45 saiga, which I did NOT put a bullet guide in.

I had my AK magazine with me yesterday, but my bullet guide isn't in yet, so I didn't have the guts to give it a whirl. Moreover, my BHO spring wasn't in, and it was effectively a single shot unless I did finger gymnastics to hold it down while I shot.

Won't last 1,000 rounds? I fired over 1,500 through one of my AK's in three days at a class last summer. I put at least that much through it before I went, and probably twice that since. That would put it in the 6,000 round ballpark, and I haven't had a single malfunction yet. It's got a lot more life left in it.

My Norinco has had over 5k exclusively of cheap russian ammo and I think its been getting more accurate. I bought the gun from the original owner who had it since the early 90s who sold it to me for $210. He said the rifle was shot the snot out during his ownership. I got the gun, cleaned her up only to see that beautiful shiny bore in her, then 3 years and 5500k rounds later still one of the nicest AKs I've handled. Never a jam, not rust or piting. My favorite gun out of my collection.

1000's through a WASR. Less 1000's through an Arsenal. That covers the spectrum.

    They are jealous because:
    a) They paid 3-5x as much for the AR's
    b) They spend more time cleaning and clearing jams than shooting
    c) They can't afford to shoot hundreds of rounds in .223

Won't last 1000. You need to take them on head to head round for round vs their AR's. awesome opportunity to part a couple of fools from their money!

I can, and have, worked on and fixed my WASR and Saiga in my shop using: A mallet, rat tail file, bench grinder, angle grinder, chisel, punches, small sledge, spray paint, and pliers. I also have found parts for my Saiga in a hardware store(small cotter keys for retaining the axis pins and 3/16" plastic hole plugs). I use 30 weight oil on them too, although I need to go to something thicker. It tends to get thin and runny after 4 mag dumps.

Do all that to an AK and it fixes, do all that to an AR and you'll probably crack/shatter the receivers into pieces.

Can anyone say they've done that to an AR and it not been FUBAR?

I was thinking that, too. Made me hop on Gunbroker to look for one like it. I can tell you there are none for anything close to $210, and none with furniture like that.

I seem to remember someone doing this before and the winner got to crap in the losers rifle. The loser being the guy with the AK. It is all about accurate fire.

Over all, I have shot a couple thousand rounds through AKS.

With my current AKs, not that much.

IZHMASH rates life expectancy of a military FA specimen at something like 12K. Your Saiga should go at least that far.
