What is the practical point of a survival gun that uses expensive and hard to find specialty ammo?
Well....one would be the better ballistics (300 BLK vs 5.56) with pistol length barrels

So the 300BLK makes the same energy with a supersonic in a pistol length 10" barrel that would take a carbine length 16" barrel for a 5.56x45mm.
Local Gun Stores & even Walmart are known to stock multiple loadings of 300 Blackout.
And Gunbot (
http://www.gunbot.net/ammo/rifle/300blackout/ ) lists a large selection relatively inexpensive ammo in stock (as low as 45 cents a round for Supers & as low as 80 cents for Subsonics....inexpensive relative to the well over $1 a round M855/SS109 during the Newtown/Obama ammo drought) from many online vendors.
But what is more important to a major SHTF is.... I STOCK IT....& so do many friends & relatives, as I certainly would not rely on retail stores or online venues post-event.
But what is most important is the intrinsic qualities of the 300 Blackout platform...
..such as functioning with subsonics or supersonics, suppressed or unsuppressed in any combination without fiddling with gas settings.
Supersonics having the energy of a personal favorite (7.62x39mm), but with better accuracy & the ergonomics of an AR.
Subsonics with the energy of a 20 yard .45 ACP hardball at 500-700 yards, yet unbelievably quiet, reliable & accurate in well suppressed platforms.
If someone is concerned about the availability or expense of a increasingly popular & versatile ammo like 300BLK.... that may be needed post-event....I would say they might needed to have planned a little better during good times.
YMMV
