I am considering getting some pretty wood grip scales for my new CZ 75. This is likely to become the "house gun".

I have noticed that a couple of noted revolver marksmen use smooth grips on their weapons. Would smooth grip scales or checkered be advisable on an autoloading handgun used for defense?

Or is this a personal preference issue?

You don't see smooth grips on autos as often as revolvers, perhaps because the auto's grip tang makes it easier to get perfect hand placement while the gun is still in the holster, making it less necessary to be able to make minor grip adjustments during the draw. Different geometry at work. If smooth grip panels are the choice, I'd recommend checkering or striations on backstrap and/or front strap. As you noted, there's a lot of personal preference at work.
