Just watched Terminator, deal with the title haters.

    http://www.darpa.mil/Our_Work/TTO/Programs/DARPA_Robotics_Challenge.aspx

DARPA has contracted a company for developing autonomous "humanitarian, disaster relief and related operations" robots. They are to be humanoid. Nothing could go wrong from this, right? AI technology is moving faster than the safeguards that could deal with it.

Wiki for the company that got the contract. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Dynamics[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNZPRsrwumQ&feature=player_embedded"]BigDog Overview (Updated March 2010) - YouTube[/ame]

    Thats creepy.

The engineering is very impressive. I wonder how much better the current models are....

    I've long maintained two things:

    1) The people who honestly think that a fully autonomous, weaponized, AI droid or drone are either pathologically insane or have never seen Terminator

    2) The people who honestly think that searching for and attempting to contact extra-terrestrial life forms are either pathologically insane or have never seen Alien

Jesus people, we KNOW how these kinds of things turn out already. We've known since at least 1980 what happens - yet we've CONTINUED to pursue both of them!

    Flying robot swarms!

16min long but really really cool. Physics talk of how they fly, then demonstrations of them doing it.

So how many tens of millions of dollars are being spent to develop something that basically does about 1/2 what a burro can do... except that it sounds like a chain-saw all the time and has limited range and "staying power" (and it would probably short out in a rainstorm). The only legitimate use I can see for this thing is for entry into areas contaminated by toxic chemicals or life-threatening radiation -- but then what's there left to rescue?

Which suggests to me that this thing is really designed to be a weapons carrier.

The future of robotics is a bit freaky - the biggest hurdle however is power.

Drone technology is all the rage in the warfare department. It's going to be a big game changer in warfare, if it already isn't. As significant as the gun itself, the tank, submarine, and airplane of WWI, the atom bomb of WWII. We are just starting to see the primitive start.

Think of this, China's only advantage in warfare is their HUGE population they could mobilize five times the amount of soldiers as we could, and individuals are disposable if it's for the common good. We value human life here. If we were to get in a gound war with them, even though the kill ratio would be in our favor, huge waves of troops would inflict damage, and even if they only kill one of us to ten of them, they scored big because we actually care about our troops. Well, imagine if they go to fight us and we launch waves and waves of robots at them. Even to a suicidal determined army, it would be extremely demoralizing knowing that after a hard battle and tens to hundreds of thousands are killed and not one actual Enemy was killed, and while it takes a lifetime to produce a soldier, we pop them off the assembly line like hot cakes in a few hours. Then of course they might get smart and make their own robots, then that would be quite a show... until the robots see what's going on and get the ability to decide that we are the enemy. That's where man will go extinct.

You can fight it all you want, but somewhere, someone is going to give a robot/computer a form of inteligence where it can make it's own decisions (already been done) and then give that robot/computer the means to fight. It's not if, it's when. It's probably already been done, just a matter of time it will go wrong.

I'm pretty sure it was pakistan or afghanistan but a fully automated armed drone took it upon itself to fire a missle and killed some insurgents, it was the first time (admitted) a robot made a choice to kill a human, it was a bit of a controversy, but then something else happened and everyone forgot. I don't know if someone authorized the launch, but from what I know, the drone made the decision by itself.

We need the robots to stave off the impending ET invasion. Unless the robots go crazy and try to kill us before ET arrives, then we would need to contact the ET's to help us kill the robots. Either way we are screwed, and should invest in Old Glory Robot Insurance.

Don't worry, the superinteligent AI will forget to lock the circut breaker that powers it's CPU or not waterproof its mobile remotes or otherwise leave some massive loophole like an unarmored waste port that a clever human can exploit to destroy it.

And we know clones that were programmed with growth acceleration were much better than battle droids. Besides, when the drones control ship is destoyed by a kid who pushes, some wrong buttons, the whole army goes to sleep..
