My dad is a pilot for a large airline which has a program that offers free training for pilots to carry while flying. He's interested in taking them up on it, but needs to get a good handgun. He doesn't know much about weapons and I'm only a novice at best so we need some suggestions. I took him out this past weekend to shoot my Glock 19 and he liked it, but he thought the grip was a little wide.

So, what's a good single stack 9mm for around $400 that's dependable? I found a Sig Sauer P250 for $407 at Bud's. It's received pretty good reviews from what I can find. Anyone have any experience with one? Any other weapons he should look at?

Does he want something concealable? The Kahr line of pistols are thin and light. I have a CW9 that is easy to shoot and easier to carry. I highly recommend you look at them.

I thought the Sig 250 sucked. ?? And was a double stack.

    For $400 I'd go with a used Glock or S&W J frame.

$400 is right in the pricerange for crappy guns.

Sig's site says that the P250 is 1.3" wide. The Glock 19 is 1.18" wide. Of course, I have never held a P250, so I can't speak about how wide its grip feels compared to the Glock.

As for single stack 9s, I would say Kel-Tec PF-9, or the Kahr PM9 or CW9, if he's willing to spend a little more. He definitely needs to go to a good gun store or better yet, a gun show, and hold some different makes and models in his hand.

    S&W 6906 holds 12 rds 9mm, but it's still very slim....almost as slim as the 3913.

3913 is nice and on my list of "next to get" if the price is right. Although, will probably be a few bucks north of 400.00 depending on condition.

If he pulls a gun in the flight deck, the width of the pistol is not going to be crossing his mind. And I usually associate the cost of the gun with its use...I'd be spending more than $400 to defend both my life and a multi-million dollar aircraft. Unless I found a Glock for that price.

You could get a pretty good Sig P6 (a.k.a the P225) for $400. They don't make them anymore, so they're all used, but they're relatively available due to the influx of old West German police trade-ins.

I'll second the PF9. Finally found one, I was looking for a PF9 or a Kahr PM9, and I came across a PF9 first. Have about 500 rounds through it now, I'm happy and have no reason to look for a PM9. My LCP would be for sale right now if my wife didn't think it was so cute.

I'll second the P225/P6 for slim under $400. Smith 3913 if used could be that price. Kahr would be next on the list.

And when Glock says 1.18" wide they mean the slide. The grips are thicker. They used to specify that in their manuals. I haven't read a new one. I suppose if they leave it vague they are worried about Smith because they are that thin in the grips.

I think the Taurus PT709 may be hit and miss. I bought two. The one that I have fired so far is doing great. The other one has a funky feeling to it when I dry fire it, and the fit and finish does not look as good.

The kahr CW9 may run slightly more than $400, but would be a good choice. I just ordered a Kahr P9, and think I have probably found my thrill.

Don't limit your budget to 400. Sig 225, sig 239, or a Kahr cw9 would be good choices.

I have a sig p6 that I paid less than 400 for but would have been better off saving for a nice 239 or a CW9/P9.

also in the 400ish range I guess a Ruger sr9 or sr9c would work.

I could give a crap what it's supposed to cost, as long as it works well.
IMO the 3913 would be a great choice and runs about 400 or less used.
