Do you need to file a police report for a single car accident for an optimal insurance claim outcome? Example, a person crashed into a snow bank that has been iced over and causes fairly severe front end damage.

Probably wouldn't hurt in any way. Most agencies have them online I believe.

In the situation you describe as the example, most insurance companies, if not all, would require a police report as a document of fact.

I caught the bumper of my truck on one of those telephone pole guy/guide wires. Almost pulled the entire front end of the truck off. Called insurance, they told me to take it to Ford, wrote Ford a check. No police involved.

Absolutely positively not. Unless a careless driving ticket may help out your premium.

I've not had a police report for any of the accidents I reported to my insurance. State Farm never had any issues.

The only time a police report really becomes necessary is when there is a dispute about fault between two parties. Then that report is the official record of what occurred an will be used to determine who has to pay what to whom.
