As you may know, last year Sig Sauer introduced the P226 and 229 E2 models. In a nutshell, these had a reduced grip, the Short Trigger, as well as their SRT trigger system. However, the E2 series was officially discontinued late last year. But it looks like what really happened was that they replaced the standard P226 and P229 with the E2 models. My question is, are the new P226/229 pistols identical to the E2 models? Specifically, do they come with the SRT trigger standard or is it just a different grip? I know you get the SRT standard on an Enhanced Elite but does it also come on a standard P226 or 229 now?

The E2, the short trigger and the SRT are all mutually exclusive. Some happen to be that way all together but there are plenty that have different combos.

The E2 grips are here to stay. The E2 as a model does not seem to exist anymore.

New guns are identical in frame and manufacture, the SHORT RESET TRIGGER is standard on most of the guns that are not entry level. You see the SLIM trigger - I call it the anorexic trigger - from time to time. Standard 226's are traditional DA/SA. Any armorer can upgrade you from DA/SA to SRT easily.

Not for the P226, but for the P229 they switched the 9mm frames to the .40 frames to universalize production. Which is why the new 15 round mags have a -1, and they don't fit into old frames as well.

From TGS:

SIG SAUER P229 E2 15 round magazine for 9mm E2 P229 models. These magazines will not fit P228's or P229 9mm's that typically use 9mm 13RD magazines. The E2 and some of the recent P229 9mm models use a .40S&W frame which has a larger diameter magazine well. Matte phosphate finish.

Every Sig that goes out the door should have the SRT. I E2'ed both my carry 229R and my 226R, including Grip, SRT, and short trigger. It makes for a nice package all in all and worth the money.
How would you say the E2 grips compare in size with, for instance, the S&W M&P with medium backstrap installed or, if you've never handled one of those, a Gen 3 G17.

I own a G34, which replaced my M&P 9L, and I have a P228 with E2 grips, which just left for CCR. The E2 grip is about the same size as the small backstrap from M&P, yes that small. However, if you like the trigger reach even smaller, you can use the short trigger as well, making it even smaller. The Glock Gen 3 frame is significantly bigger than the E2 and M&P with small backstrap. The E2 grip is more round from the web to trigger, while the M&P is more oval. Another difference is the texture of the E2 much grippier than the M&P and Glock Gen 3. In my mind that is a good thing. Just my $.02.

Wow, that might border on the trigger reach being too short in SA. Don't new production Sigs come with the short (not SRT) trigger standard? That's what it pictured on the website for both the 226 and 229. I've messed with a Sig with a short trigger installed and actually didn't like the way it felt on my finger. The sides were almost sharp and the right side sort of dug into my finger. However, that was with the old grips. Maybe the new ones would change where where the trigger contacted my finger enough that it wouldn't be an issue.

My P226 was built before the E2 grip change, but my co worker has a new P229 Enhanced Elite model. The new grip is fantastic. The Sig grips were pretty big, but the new grip is noticeably smaller and very comfortable. The EE model has the SRT and I have to say the reset is shorter but I could take it or leave it. The single action trigger takes away allot of the advantae of a short reset vs a DA only trigger. It does't have the audible click that Glock has either.

Wow, this was a horrible move on the part of SIG. I can understand selling a lot of the E2 guns, but doing away with the normal version completely? Some of us have large hands and the old grips fit just right.

Also, the E2 models just don't look right, kinda top heavy, with the undersized grip.

Agreed. I'm not interested in anything Exeter is making now anyway, but assuming they get their act together at some point, I'll still have no interest in anything with the E2 grip. The old grip fits me very well.

Well, I haven't seen one in person yet but I have little girl hands and the new grip seems like it would help out a lot. You're right, they should have made the E2 grip an option rather than adopting it across the board and tossing the old grip style. After all, you guys with huge gorilla hands should be able to shoot comfortably too.:tongueout:

Had a P229 with an E2 grip. Note the past tense. Try as I might, I just couldn't get into it. Sig should just leave the E2 as an option, rather than making it standard across the board on all P226s and P229s. Meh.

Agreed . Maybe they should have grip options like 2022 has. Btw, I love mine. It's well balanced and very reliable.

Why? Was the grip too small for you?
Yes, I didn't care for it at all. I much prefer the classic P226/P229 grip over the E2.

The E2 actually felt good the first time I felt it, which is why I bought it. After using it for a while, I honestly grew to dislike it very much.

Had I not had other Sigs, I would have simply changed the grip to a classic P-series grip, but I had a friend who loved it, so I sold him the P229.

Now, all my P-series Sigs have the classic style grips on them - and that is how it's gonna stay.

I had a 229 E2. By far the most comfortable grip I've ever held, even better than the P30.

I did not care for the SRT at all.
