    Hello all,

I have a 12ga Mossberg 500 with a smooth bore barrel. Can I shoot "rifled" slugs from the thing? I see the place I love to hate the most (Walmart) is having a sale on these...and I have a NRA shotgun class this weekend...

    help!

Yes and rifled slugs are actually made just for this reason. I hope you have more than a single bead for sights since you will get more accuracy at longer range with a "rifle sights" barrel.

As you can see, I really need to do this class.

Thank you for clearing this up for me. I see another trip to Walmart in my near future...

One more advice, if you are shooting a choked barrel try them in the least restrictive choke that you have or modified or less.

Thanks for that tidbit. I don't intend to use any chokes, etc. But it's good to know.

If your gun has screw-in chokes you MUST use one at all times or run the risk of REALLY messing up your barrel... or possibly WORST!

I checked the barrel on purchase, except for a little (very) notch in the barrel where the front sight is, the last 3-4 " of the barrel (as far as I could see or stick my finger) is smooth - totally smooth.

So what's the deal here guys? I don't want to mess thing thing up...

    help a newbie please.

NYC Drew, can you post a picture of the end of your barrel?

With that barrel, no chokes can be used. Straight cylinder bore. Blaze away with any kind of shotgun ammo. I have a Mossberg 500a. Love it. What barrel length is yours?

Honestly? I have no idea. I assume it's 22-24", because it holds 7 + 1. (NY is 5+1 legal for hunting).

I bought it used a week or so ago for a NRA basic shotgun class.

    Here is a picture.
