    Mun.Polo Oriental Mindoro

Communist insurgents seized a town mayor of Oriental Mindoro and his two police bodyguards after killing his two military escort in a two hours shootout yesterday may 4,2007.

Kudos to them for making their last stand in the house of Dr. Leonidas Soria. They just ran out of ammo... what a loss...they stood their ground and fought to the last bullet.

Soria said the rebels sorrounded his house and took the mayor and the 2 police escort after killing the soldiers.....:fallenofficer:

this incident should have landed the frontpage..:steamed:

The mayor and his security details made the last stand. They attended the reunion of the family of Dr. Soria when they encountered a group of npa rebels around 3pm.

the barangay was just 15 kilometers away from the town proper. the escorts fired at the armed group when the residents told them that they were NPA rebels.

Soria and mayor anaras and his group decided to retreat and take cover in his house after sensing they wre about to be overpowered.

Soria & Aranas and two bodyguard ran to one of the rooms of the house while shooting it out with the NPA but that the mayor decided to surrender at around 445pm after his men ran out of ammo.

the mayor was even berated by a rebel for bring army soldiers with him. its his second time that he was abducted by the rebel. last May 2004 he was kidnapped and he paid the an undetermined amount of money for his release.

I hope and pray that mayor aranas and his two police escort will come out of this alive....I pray for his life...

was the NPA rebels a threat to them in the first place? where they tipped by intelligence sources that they're coming to get him? If not, then why do you suppose they fired at those communist rebels?
looks to me that those rebels were just passing by and they were the ones who initiated the confrontation? But, if the npa's did have plans of abducting him then its a good thing that they defended him and made their last stand. If it's the second time he was abducted then he it could probably may have been an attempt by the npa's to abduct him and he could've doubled his efforts by having military escorts for security reasons specially when attending functions or reunions. any civilians hurt during the encounter?

yeah, i agree but the thing of it is who initiated the confrontation first?
these NPA communist rebels may just have passed thru that town. and if they engaged the enemy first with just him (mayor) his escorts or bodyguards, then he may have endangered the lives of other civilians specially when they used the dr's house to hide into during the shootout.
what they could've done is to report the rebels to a nearby military station (im sure there's one specially in hot zones).

sir, medyo malabo yan sinabi mo. pag ang NPA nandyan maybe passing thru lng is very alarming na. the fact na ang presence ng NPA eh nandyan then all the lives of other civilians not symphatitic to them are endangered already. and ang tanong ko eh kaninong area ba ito under ba sa Police or Army? pag napapasok ng NPA yung ganitong mga lugar, then WHO IS NOT doing his homework?

by the way, they will engage anybody who are armed and or in uniform and kng magaling ang intel ng afp magaling din ang intel ng NPA. its not coincidence na andun ang NPA. when they travel by group at expose then may gagawin yan. FYI pala yung mayor talaga yung misyon nila. he is now being forced to leave the town by the NPA. and he was also kidnapped by the NPA before. the face of the enemy has change they may be idealistic and full of principles in the past but now they are a group of mercenaries and hold uppers kidnappers and extortionists. sabihin mo man good ka so hindi maaring mag create ng trobol yung NPA sayo eh walang kinikilalang gud or bad ang NPA. now if mag babayad ka tax sa kanila until when ka magbabayad ng tax? pero ang masasabi ko lng in my own opinion cguro ha walang masyadong resources itong mayor na kinidnapped kasi under threat na cya ganun lmng binigay na escort ng govt sa kanya. the insurgency problem of the phils is the longest running insurgency in the world.

If the mayor was already kidnapped before, then probably their motive was to do it again. correct me if im wrong, but the npa didnt go to that town to liquidate civilians, right? they just shoot it out with the mayor and his escorts. if these npa's come in groups and exposed, then they have already lost tactical advantage or probably they're that confident and arrogant doing it in broad daylight probably because they already got intel about where the target was and the minimal number of his bodyguards. well, its a possiblity.
but my question is, how does the rules of engagement apply on this case?
a group of rebels carrying weapons, going to a particular area, how do we know that their intentions are hostile? obviously they're not just there to ask for a cup of coffee or anything like that, or maybe they're just passing thru. If we suspect that they're indeed a threat, should we fire first and draw first blood? or should we wait for them to fire first before we retaliate? rules of engagement right?
from what i read, the escorts fired first. did the rebels show hostile intent? like shoot a civilian, hold a civilian hostage? point guns and ask for the mayor? coz its not really clear.. why?
just a question sir..:) coz the way i see it, the escorts shot first based on the story and some of them ended up dead, and in retaliation, knowing the mayor's actual location, who eventually, lost a lot of ammo and was outgunned and outnumbered obviously, the rebels thought in retaliation..." let's kidnap him again". just my thoughts.
